Restore messages using the Cloud

Messages that have been backed up to your Cloud account can be restored. If your messages are not in the Cloud backup, you may need to check other recovery methods available on your device or through your messaging app.

Use Samsung Cloud

Samsung Cloud can recover backed-up messages from Samsung Messages.

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, then tap Accounts and backup.
  2. Tap Restore data under Samsung Cloud.
  3. Select your desired device, then select Messages, and then tap Restore.
  4. Tap Done when it's finished.
Note
Data backed up to your Google account can only be restored on a phone with the same Android version or a higher version.

Use Google Drive

Google Drive can recover messages from Samsung Messages, Google Messages, and other messaging apps.

You can restore messages from a backup when you set up a new phone for the first time or after performing a factory reset. You will be prompted to sign in to your Google account during the initial setup; when prompted, just enter your account credentials, then follow the on-screen instructions to restore data backed up to your account.

Restore messages using Smart Switch

Note
You may need to allow permissions on your phone to complete the process. Messages cannot be viewed on your computer from the backup files, but they can be read once they are transferred to the new phone.
Smart Switch is a powerful tool for managing your device's data. To restore deleted messages, follow these steps using a backup you've previously created.

To use Smart Switch to transfer from phone to phone:

  1. Plug both phones into their chargers.
  2. When you’re ready, place the phones within 4 inches of each other. Launch Smart Switch on both phones.
  3. Tap Send data on the old phone, then tap Receive data on the new phone, and then tap Wireless on both phones.
  4. On the phone you want to transfer the messages to, select the type of your old phone (Galaxy, iPhone, etc.).
  5. Follow any on-screen instructions; some devices may have additional steps.
  6. Next, complete the connection by tapping Allow on the previous phone.
  7. On the phone you are transferring messages to, select Messages, and then tap Transfer.
  8. Once the transfer is complete, tap Done on the new phone, and then tap Close on the old phone.

To use Smart Switch to transfer from a PC or Mac to a phone:

  1. If you previously created and saved a backup file on your PC or Mac, you can transfer content from your PC to a Galaxy phone. First, turn off or temporarily disable the firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, or any other security tools on your computer so all of your files can transfer.
  2. Open Smart Switch on your computer. When prompted, connect your phone to the computer using a USB cable. Once it’s connected, the Smart Switch screen will appear.
  3. On your computer, select Restore, and, if desired, select the backup data to restore.
  4. When you're ready, select Restore now. Once the restore is complete, select OK.

To use Smart Switch to transfer from an SD card, USB flash drive, or SSD to a phone:

  1. If you’ve recently backed up your phone to an SD card, and both phones support it, insert the SD card from the previous phone into the new Galaxy phone you want to transfer messages to. If you backed up your data to a USB flash drive or SSD, connect the device to the Galaxy phone’s charging port. You may need to use an OTG adapter.
  2. Next, launch Smart Switch.
  3. Select the storage device’s icon, and then tap Restore. Select what you’d like to restore, and then tap Restore again.
  4. When the process is complete, tap Done. You can repeat this process as many times as needed to transfer all of your data.
