Samsung refrigerator is dispensing water instead of ice

If your Samsung refrigerator dispenses water when you press for ice, this usually means there is a connection or setting problem. Double-check your dispenser settings and make sure the wiring harness and water lines are connected correctly. With a few simple checks, you can get your ice dispenser working as expected again.

When you dispense ice, do you get a mixture of ice and water, or is it only water?

Important
The RS27T and RS22T models have two water lines to connect. If they are cross-connected, the water and ice dispensing functions will not work correctly. If you have one of these models and the dispenser has not worked since installation, check these lines.
1
Make sure Ice is selected.
Certain models have a different way of selecting ice, either cubed or crushed. Make sure water isn't selected by accident. Also, switch between cubed and crushed ice and try dispensing both types.

Check the wiring harness.

The wiring harness is located at the top of the left door. If it is not connected properly, the dispenser will not work.

To check the wiring harness, you will need a phillips head screwdriver and you may need a step stool.

  1. Remove the screws from the door hinge cover and lift the cover.
  2. Unplug and then reconnect the wiring harness to make sure there is a firm connection.
  3. Reattach the door hinge cover and reinsert the screws.

If you need additional help, instructions for connecting the wire harness can be found in the section of the user manual for reattaching the doors.

Note
Ice that is slushy while it is still in the ice bucket is typically caused by a cooling issue, such as the doors not staying shut. Perform the steps in our freezer is not cooling enough article to troubleshoot slushy ice.

When ice is dispensed, especially crushed ice, the refrigerator may experience residual ice sitting in the ice chute. When the residual ice melts, it appears as a leak from the water dispenser. To avoid this, keep the ice chute clean of residual ice. Dispensing some cubed ice after getting crushed ice will help clear out the chute as well.

If the ice chute is clear of residual ice, but a steady stream of water continues to dispense along with the ice, perform the troubleshooting in the "Only water comes out when ice is dispensed" section.
