Cannot download and use device controllers in SmartThings

To control connected smart devices remotely via the SmartThings app, ensure the device’s controller is downloaded. When adding a device, the controller typically downloads automatically, but verify the download was successful for seamless control.

Cannot download and use device controllers in SmartThings

1

Navigate to your desired device.

Open the SmartThings app on your device. If the device is in a different location, tap the Location drop-down menu in the top left, select the desired location, then go to the Devices tab at the bottom.
2

Download the controller.

If the controller did not previously download, a pop-up message will appear. Tap DOWNLOAD to install it. After the installation, view the device's status and its available controller options, which vary by device.
3

Make sure you are within 15 feet and the device is powered on.

If the controller still doesn’t download, ensure the device is powered on and within 15 feet. Repeat the steps or try removing and re-adding the device in SmartThings.

  • To remove it, go to the Devices tab at the bottom, tap More options (three dots), select the device, and tap Remove twice to confirm.
  • To re-add it, go to the Devices tab at the bottom, then tap the Add (plus) icon, and then tap Add device. Follow the on-screen instructions to search and connect your device. Once added, the device’s controller will automatically download to enable remote control.
