How to manage your Samsung Smart Home when moving

Last Update date : 2023-04-27

Moving can be stressful, especially when it comes to managing your smart home. If you own a Samsung Smart Home setup, it's important to plan ahead. In this article, we'll provide you with some tips on how to manage your smart home effectively during a move.

Smart homes, like traditional homes, sometimes require moving on to new places. Whether you're leaving your old home or moving into a new one, it's possible that some smart devices may need to be left behind for the next owner. The good news is that transferring ownership is a straightforward process, even if you can't contact the previous or current owner.

1 Open the SmartThings app on your mobile device.
2 Tap on the device you want to remove from your account.
3 Tap on the gear icon in the top right corner of the device screen.
4 Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and select "Remove device."
5 Confirm that you want to remove the device by tapping "OK."

If your device has a screen, like the Family Hub refrigerator, you'll also need to perform a factory reset before removing it from your account. Check the reset section at the end of this article for instructions.

If you're sharing a device with someone else, you'll want to invite them to join your SmartThings home by tapping the "+" button in the Members section. If you need to remove someone from your SmartThings home, you can do so in the Members section, or users can voluntarily leave on their own.

  • Note: that granting someone access to your SmartThings home shares the name and Samsung account of all users with access, and grants control of and access to usage history of all devices in the home. It's important to keep this in mind when inviting others to join your SmartThings home.

To set up your new SmartThings capable appliances and devices, follow these steps:

1 Download the SmartThings app and install it on your phone or mobile device.
2 Take your time to get familiar with the app and check out the tip videos.
3 Follow the on-screen instructions to add your device.
4 If the device was previously registered to another owner, you will be prompted to take ownership of the device.
5 If the device is now yours, select "Make me the owner" to remove the device from the previous owner's account and add it to yours.
6 If you're requesting to join the previous owner's entire SmartThings home, select "How to request an invitation" to get instructions on how to request an invitation.
7 Follow the on-screen directions specific to your situation and the appliance or device you're connecting.
8 If you have trouble connecting to SmartThings, refer to the troubleshooting guide.
9 If you want to reset the appliance so the previous owner no longer has access to it, refer to the network reset instructions in the next section.

That's it! You're now ready to enjoy your new smart home.

In multi-family rental apartments, ownership turnover often happens but the Wi-Fi network name and password may remain the same. In order to protect the privacy of residents, it's important to reset the network settings of all appliances with each change of resident. Refer to the following section for guidance on resetting the appliances' connectivity settings.

Rest assured that SmartThings ensures the privacy of your information from non-members of your SmartThings home. Unless you leave your Wi-Fi network behind with the same name and password, all the appliances will be disconnected and won't connect online without being set up under a new owner. For added peace of mind and privacy concerns, it's recommended to wipe the appliance completely and do a network reset before leaving it behind. Follow the instructions below to reset appliances based on the device type:
