Capturing New York culture with Samsung Photographer Siena Saba

When she’s not in class, you can find Siena Saba front row at concerts or on the streets of lower Manhattan. The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) student’s devoted to photographing youth culture and the New York music scene. Luckily, she pressed pause on her projects to talk about her process and inspiration.

How it all started

Saba plunged into photography during high school. On weekends, the native Long Islander hopped on the train to explore Manhattan through the lens of her camera. Since these trips, she’s found inspiration in the energy of live music and the intimacy of portraits — especially of her peers. Just check out her Instagram. It’s overflowing with raw photos of friends and moving close-ups of musicians.

“I think musical artists inspire me more than photographers — on and off stage. I feel things very deeply, and music hits me.”

Shoot from the gut

She’s not about studios and premeditated setups; her style’s more documentary and DIY with a self-described “dark twist”. She likes to get a read on her subject in their natural habitat before taking any sudden shots. Once her instincts snap in, she adjusts her lighting in Pro Mode, frames up her shot with the Galaxy’s gridlines, and captures the photo.

Commit to the shot

She’s done a lot to get the shot — like when she hung out in the front row for hours, waiting for Tyler the Creator to take the Afro Punk stage. “I was in the mosh pit, it was really hot out,” Saba remembers. “My friends and I were passing around one water bottle trying to save the water.” Once the show started, there was so much to absorb: his moves, set design, lighting, and the energy of the crowd. Luckily, her Galaxy Note9 was ready.

Saba likes to have her Galaxy camera settings adjusted before concerts begin. “I don’t want to play with them that much [on location]” said Saba. “I like to stand there… take it all in before I go in and start shooting.” Her Galaxy Note9 “can do what other phones can’t,” Saba noted. Plus, it slides into her back pocket, so she doesn’t have to carry around a bulky camera — especially since some venues don’t allow them.

“Being able to adjust everything on your own instead of relying on Auto… lets you get more creative.”

Words of advice: Do you

Saba’s mantra for photographers just starting out: focus on yourself. “Don’t look at others like they are competition because they’re not. Because everyone sees everything differently,” empathized Saba. “Nobody has your vision. No one is thinking the way you’re thinking.” Likewise, don’t look to mimic shots. Experiment with lighting and framing in Pro Mode to find your personal style.

Looking to the future

Her dream is to build relationships with artists and intimately document their tours and lives, on and off stage. She’s making moves towards this goal with personal work and internships. “I recently started working as an intern at Cinematic Music Group shooting events and working closely with the head photographer,” said Saba.
