Tips & Tricks: Bedding and your Top Load Washer

Many Samsung Top Load washers are equipped with a Bedding cycle intended to wash bulky items like comforters, pillows, blankets, etc. Even though your washer may have a Bedding cycle, the material you want to wash may not be made for machine washes.

These are general guidelines for the washing and care of your bedding. For the best results refer to the care instructions provided by the manufacturer of your comforter and pillows. Although more expensive, you may also consider having your comforter dry cleaned.

Down Comforters:

When you first unpack your down comforter it may appear wrinkled and flat. You can restore it by shaking or fluffing it in your dryer on Wrinkle Prevent. If you're using your dryer add a couple of dryer balls or rings to help fluff the feathers. Air out your new comforter for a day or two before using it for the first time and then every few months thereafter. With proper care, your down comforter will give you years of comfort. A comforter cover can extend its life even more. For long term storage consider using a vacuum storage bag. It keeps the comforter flat to save space, but more importantly it's going to keep it clean and dry.

  • Washing your Comforter - If you plan to machine wash your down comforter, wash it separately regardless of size. Use WARM water and mild detergent on a BEDDING cycle (never bleach this item). You may have to rinse the comforter more than once to remove any excess laundry detergent.

Tip: Although more time intensive, you may also consider hand washing your comforter.

  • Drying your Comforter - Dry on a low heat cycle in a large-capacity dryer. Use dryer balls or rings to help fluff the down feathers. To help your comforter dry evenly, remove the comforter from the dryer and re-position it. We suggest airing the comforter out on a comforter rack for a day or two after the drying cycle to ensure that the comforter is completely dry.
  • Down & Fiber Filled Pillows - Sorry folks, these are Dry clean only. Air out Down or Feather pillows for a day or two before you begin using them and then every few months thereafter. Take your down and feather pillows to a reputable dry cleaner.

Cotton Comforters and Pillows:

With proper care, cotton comforters and pillows will last for several years. Use a comforter cover and pillow protector to extend their life. For long term storage consider using vacuum storage bags.

  • Washing your Comforter - Wash your comforter separately regardless of size, use COOL/COLD water (warm/hot water may shrink and damage your comforter) and a mild detergent on a BEDDING cycle (never bleach this item). You may have to rinse the comforter more than once to remove any excess laundry detergent. Remove the comforter immediately after the cycle and shake it out before drying to prevent wrinkles.
  • Washing your Pillows - You can wash these but we suggest using a front loading washer. You may be able to use a large capacity top load washer but we would recommend only washing 2 pillows at a time to help keep a balanced load. Wash your pillows using COOL/WARM water and a mild detergent on a BEDDING cycle. Place the pillows in the tub horizontally. This lessens the chance of an unbalanced load. Remove the pillows immediately after the cycle and shake them out to help them regain their shape.
  • Drying your Comforter - Dry on a LOW cycle in a large-capacity dryer. To help your comforter dry evenly and save time, remove the comforter from the dryer every 15 minutes or so and re-position it. Then remove it from the dryer while it’s still slightly damp to keep it from shrinking.

Tip: We suggest airing it out on a comforter rack for a day or two after the drying cycle to ensure that the comforter is completely dry.

  • Drying your Pillows - Dry on a LOW cycle in a large-capacity dryer. To help keep your pillows nicely fluffed use dryer balls or rings. Remove them from the dryer while they’re slightly damp to keep them from shrinking. Airing them out on a rack for a day or two after the drying cycle will ensure that they’re completely dry.

Poly Comforters and Pillows:

Polyester comforters can last for several years. Use a comforter cover to extend the life of the comforter. For long term storage consider using vacuum storage bags. You can’t wash polyester pillows but you may be able to clean them by hand. Otherwise, opt for a pillow protector and replace them as needed or every few months.

  • Drying your Comforter - Dry on a COOL/NO HEAT cycle in a large-capacity dryer. To help your comforter dry evenly and save time, remove the comforter from the dryer every 15 minutes or so and re-position it. Finally, remove it from the dryer while it’s still slightly damp.

Tip: We suggest airing it out on a comforter rack for a day or two after the drying cycle to ensure that the comforter is completely dry.
