Unlock doors in response to smoke in SmartThings

If there’s a fire in your home, you’ll want to keep your family safe. Create your own escape route by setting up an automation with the SmartThings app. With the use of a door lock and smoke detector, the app will automatically open doors for you and your loved ones in case there’s an emergency.
Add your devices to SmartThings
Before creating your automation, make sure your smoke detector and door lock are supported by SmartThings and have been installed in your home. Then, add the devices to the SmartThings app on your phone with the following steps.
Navigate to and open the SmartThings app, then tap the Devices tab, and then tap Add (the plus sign).
Depending on the device, tap Add next to Samsung devices or next to Partner devices. You can also tap Scan QR code to scan the device’s QR code, or tap Scan nearby to scan for the device.
Follow the instructions to set up the device. Once it’s been added, tap Edit to rename the device. Tap Done, and then tap Done again to confirm.
When adding the door lock, you will need to choose a hub and a room. Tap Next, then enter the lock’s programming code, and then turn on the lock. Tap Done.
Add your automation
An automation will make your devices activate based on certain conditions. For example, you can add a fire escape automation to protect your family once your smoke detector and door lock have been added to your SmartThings account.
Navigate to and open the SmartThings app, then tap the Routines tab, and then tap Add (the plus sign).
To create the automation, tap the plus icon to choose an “If” condition, such as smoke being detected in your home. Tap the desired condition, and then tap Save.
Tap Next, and then tap the plus icon to set up the desired “Then” action. For example, you can tap Control devices, and then tap Unlock door, so the lock will automatically open whenever smoke is detected. When you’re finished, tap Done.
Then, tap Save. You can select an icon for your automation if desired; tap Save.
To view the automation, tap the Routines tab. You can edit the automation or check its conditions by selecting it.
To remove the automation, tap More options (the three vertical dots), then tap Delete, and then tap the red minus icon next to the automation. Tap Delete, and then tap Done.
