Use the function keys on your Samsung laptop or notebook

The keys at the top of your Samsung laptop or notebook's keyboard (the ones that say F1, F2, etc.) are called the function keys. These shortcuts let you quickly access different laptop or notebook features without searching through a bunch of settings or menus. From changing the screen brightness to adjusting the volume, the function keys will help you maneuver through your laptop or notebook with no hassle.

Note: Information provided applies to laptops and notebooks sold in Canada. The function keys' controls may vary depending on the laptop, notebook, or keyboard.

Note: Using the Fn hot keys requires installing the Samsung Settings app for your device. Samsung Settings is used for most notebooks running Windows 10, while Book Settings is available for Galaxy Book and Galaxy Book 2. Devices that have Windows 8 or 8.1 will need to download Settings from Samsung Update.

Using the Function keys is super simple. Just press and hold the Fn key, and then press your desired function key (e.g., F1, F2, etc.). You do not have to memorize where the Function keys are located because it is right on the keys.

Here is what the keys do:

  • F1: Launch Settings or Samsung Settings, depending on your model.

  • F2: Lower the screen brightness.

  • F3: Raise the screen brightness.

  • F4: If an external display is connected, switch between the device screen and the external display.

  • F5: Lock the touchpad

  • F6: Turn the mute function on or off.

  • F7: Lower the volume.

  • F8: Raise the volume.

  • F9: Turn the keyboard backlight on or off.

  • F10: Open the Task View screen or Outdoor+ mode, depending on your model.

  • F11: Enter Full screen mode (this function may not be available for some apps). On the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, this enables the Blocking Recording mode.

  • F12: Turn Airplane mode on or off. On the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, this enables Quick Search.

Note: You can also turn off the function keys by pressing the Fn Lock button. You must press the button again to turn on the function keys.
