How to replace and clean Samsung microwave filters

Last Update date : Jul 19. 2025

Samsung over-the-range microwaves use at least one filter, and some models use two. The primary type is the grease filter, located on the underside of the microwave above the cooktop. There may be one or two grease filters depending on the model, and they should be cleaned regularly to maintain airflow and performance. Some microwaves also use a charcoal filter, which helps recirculate air back into the kitchen. Unlike grease filters, charcoal filters are not washable and should be replaced once or twice a year.

Note: If your microwave is set up to vent outside through the top or back, you do not need to clean or replace the filter.

Charcoal filters are only used in over-the-range microwaves that recirculate air back into the kitchen, rather than venting through the top or back. These filters help remove odors and should be replaced every 6 to 12 months (or more often if needed). Unlike grease filters, charcoal filters cannot be cleaned or reused.

Note: You can order a replacement from the Samsung Canada Parts website.

1 Disconnect power and locate screws

Unplug the microwave, or turn off the power at the circuit breaker. Open the microwave door and locate the vent mounting screws at the top. Some models have two screws; others may have three.

2 Remove the vent cover

Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screws. Then slide the vent cover to the left and pull it straight out.

3 Remove and replace the charcoal filter

You’ll see the charcoal filter resting at an angle behind the vent. Lift and remove the old filter, then slide the new one into place. It should sit at the same angle as the original.

4 Reassemble and restore power

Reattach the vent cover, reinsert the screws, and close the microwave door. Plug the microwave back in or restore power at the breaker, then reset the clock if needed.

5 Reset the filter reminder

If the filter reminder light is on, reset it by pressing and holding the 0 button on the control panel.

The grease filter should be cleaned at least once a month, or more often if needed to maintain airflow and reduce cooking residue buildup.

Note: If your filter is damaged or missing, you can order a replacement from the Samsung Canada Parts website.

1 Release the filter case

Push the front of the grease filter case where it says PUSH. You’ll find it underneath the front of the microwave. The case will click and release.

3 Separate the filter from the case

Gently stretch the plastic housing away from the filter to pop it out.

4 Clean the grease filter

Soak the filter in hot water mixed with mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly and shake off excess water to dry. You can also use a soft brush to remove stubborn grease or debris.

5 Reassemble and reinstall the filter

Place the cleaned filter back into the plastic case. Slide the case back into its slot under the microwave until it clicks into place. Make sure the word PUSH is facing right side up.

6 Reset the filter reminder

If the filter reminder light is on, press and hold the 0 button to reset it after reinstalling the filter.

The grease filters on dual-filter models should be cleaned at least once every four months, or more frequently if cooking residue builds up. Each filter is removed and replaced the same way, except for the direction used to lock it in place.

Note: If either filter is damaged or missing, you can order replacements from the Samsung Canada Parts website.

The filter reminder on your Samsung microwave helps track when it’s time to clean or replace the filters.

If desired, you can turn the reminder on or off using the Options or My Settings menu, depending on your model. Keep in mind that even if the reminder is disabled, the filters should still be cleaned every couple of months. For model-specific instructions, check your user manual.
