What is the Smart Rotation feature on my Samsung Galaxy S4?
The Smart rotation feature uses the front camera to sense when you are looking at your device, and keeps your screen from rotating based on your face's orientation. If you are viewing your device in portrait mode, but happen to lie down the screen will remain in portrait mode.
Turn On Smart Rotation
To activate Smart rotation, go to the Home screen, touch Menu > Settings > My device > Smart screen > Smart rotation. To turn on the feature mark the Smart rotation checkbox.
Smart rotation may not work in the following situations:
When the front camera fails to detect face and eyes.
When the source of the light is behind you or when using the device in the dark.
When the front camera is already in use by another application.
When you are currently using other gestures, such as Air View.
