How do I use the text messaging application on my Samsung Galaxy S6?

Your mobile device can send text messages (Short Message Service—SMS) and multimedia messages (Multimedia Messaging Service—MMS). You can send messages, pictures, and videos via a text message.

Set Default Messaging Application

Some devices may come with other applications installed for messaging.

  1. Touch Apps .
  2. Touch Messages .
  3. To change your default to Samsung Messages, touch YES.
  4. Touch YES again to confirm your choice.
  5. You will be taken to the Messages screen.
  6. To change your default Messaging application, touch Apps > Settings > Applications > Default Applications.

Create a Text Message

If you exit a message before sending it, a draft will be saved.

  1. From the Home screen, touch Apps  > Messages  .
  2. Touch to compose a message.
  3. Touch the Enter recipients field to manually enter a recipient, or touch to add a recipient from Contacts or Groups.
  4. When you enter a recipient's name manually, your device will display the possible matches as you type. Touch the contact in the list to add it.
  5. Touch the Enter message field to begin composing your message.
  6. Touch to insert an emoticon.
  7. Touch to send the message.

Delete a Text Message

Delete a Single Message

  1. Touch the thread containing the message you want to delete.
  2. Touch and hold the message for one to two seconds, and then touch Delete.
  3. Touch DELETE  again to confirm the message deletion.

Delete Message Threads

  1. From the conversation view, touch and hold a conversation.
  2. Mark the checkbox for each message thread you want to delete, or mark the All checkbox to delete all of the message threads. All messages in the conversation will be deleted.
  3. Touch DELETE.
  4. Touch DELETE again to confirm the message thread deletion.

Add an Attachment to a Text Message

  1. From the Home screen, touch Apps  > Messages  .
  2. Touch to compose a message.
  3. Touch the Enter recipients field to manually enter a recipient, or touch to add a recipient from Contacts or Groups.
  4. When you enter a recipient's name manually, your device will display the possible matches as you type. Touch the contact in the list to add it.
  5. Touch the Enter message field to begin composing your message.
  6. Touch  to add an attachment.
  7. Choose from Recent pictures, Image, Take picture, Video, Record Video, Audio, Record audio, Memo, Calendar, Maps, or Contacts.
  8. Touch to send the message.

Save an MMS Attachment

Save an Attachment

When you receive an MMS message, you can save the attachments to your device and access them from other applications.

  1. From the conversation thread view, touch the attachment to view it.
  2. Touch SAVE to save the attachment.

Save Multiple Attachments

If the message has multiple attachments, you can save all of them at once.

  1. Touch and hold an attachment, and then touch Save attachment.
  2. Mark the checkbox for each attachment you want to save, or mark the Select all checkbox to save all of the attachments. Touch SAVE to copy the files to your device.

Text Message Options

From the conversations list, touch MORE > Settings for the following options:

  • Notifications:
    • Notification sound: Choose a default notification sound.
    • Vibrate: Have your device vibrate when a new message is received.
    • Pop-up display: Display new messages as pop-ups on any screen outside the Messages application, except for the lock screen.
  • Backgrounds and bubbles: Choose different conversation bubbles and backgrounds.
  • Quick responses: Choose from pre-installed messages or create and save your own.
  • Spam filter:
    • Manage spam numbers: Enter phone numbers to mark as spam.
    • Manage span phrases: Enter phrases to mark  as spam.
    • Spam messages: View messages marked as spam.
  • Chat settings:
    • Send display status: Display your online status.
    • Auto download file: Have your device automatically download files.
    • Roaming auto download: Have your device automatically download files while roaming.
    • Image size: Choose from Best available, Original, Large (50%), Medium (20%), or Small (10%).
    • Share typing indications: Indicate to others that you are typing.
  • Signature: Add a signature to your messages.
  • More settings:
    • Text messages:
      • Manage SIM card messages: Manage messages stored on your SIM card.
      • Input mode: Choose from GSM alphabet, Unicode, or Automatic.
      • Message center: Set your phone number.
    • Multimedia messages:
      • Auto retrieve: Have your device automatically retrieve MMS messages.
      • Set restrictions: Choose from Free, Warning, or Restricted.
    • Push messages: Allow messages to be sent to your device's operating system.
    • Cell broadcast: Allow simultaneous delivery to multiple users in a specified area.
    • Delete old messages: Automatically delete messages when the maximum limit has been reached.
  • Default messaging app: Set your default messaging application.
  • Restore messages: Restore saved messages to your inbox.
  • Callback number: Add a callback number to all messages.
  • Emergency alerts:
    • Emergency alerts: Set which types of alerts to receive.
    • Emergency notification preview: Play a sample emergency alert tone.
