What is the Interruptions feature, and how do I use it on my Samsung Galaxy Note® 4?

Note: Screens and settings available may vary by wireless service provider and software version. The Interruptions feature on your device lets you customize your notification sound settings. You can set up Priority interruptions to have your device sound or vibrate only for select notifications. Use the Mute setting to put your device in silent mode, turning off all notification sounds and vibrations. Important! The Mute setting will also silence all alarms set on your device.

Turn Off Notifications

From Settings

  1. From the Home screen, touch Apps.

  2. Touch Settings.

    It may be necessary to switch the Settings menu to list view by touching Menu > View as > List view.

  3. Touch Sounds and notifications.

  4. Touch Interruptions.

  5. Touch Sound mode and select Mute.

  6. Select the period of time to turn off notifications. When you select Indefinitely, your device will not sound or vibrate for any notifications until you turn off this setting.

  7. Touch CONFIRM.

   

Using the Volume Keys

  1. Press either Volume key on the side of your device and touch Setting.

  2. Touch MUTE.

  3. Select Indefinitely to turn off notifications until you turn them back on, or select For one hour and adjust the duration by touching Minus or Plus.

Set Up Priority Notifications

  1. From the Home screen, touch Apps.

  2. Touch Settings.

  3. Touch Sounds and notifications.

  4. Touch Interruptions.

  5. Touch Sound mode and select Sound or Vibrate to allow all notifications or only priority notifications.

  6. Touch When calls and notifications arrive and choose Always interrupt to allow all notification sounds and vibrations. Choose Only allow priority interruptions to select the notifications you want your device to sound or vibrate for.

  7. When you select Only allow priority interruptions, choose how long you want to use this setting. When you selectIndefinitely, your device will sound or vibrate only for priority interruptions until you turn off this setting.

  8. Touch CONFIRM.

  9. Mark the checkboxes next to the features you want to set as Priority interruptions.

    Choose from the following options:

    • Events and reminders: Allow notification sounds and vibrations for alarms and calendar events. This checkbox will be marked automatically.

    • Phone calls: Allow notification sounds and vibrations for incoming phone calls.

    • Messages: Allow notification sounds and vibrations for incoming messages.

    • Allowed contacts: Choose whose Phone calls and/or Messages will cause your device to play a notification sound or vibrate. Select All, Favorite contacts only, or Contacts only.

      This option is only available when the Phone calls or Messages checkboxes are marked.

Set a Priority Interruptions Period

In addition to manually setting priority interruption periods, you can set up regular times and days to allow priority interruptions. Outside of these times, your device will use the settings you created in the steps above.

  1. To set a priority interruption period, touch Days.

  2. Mark the checkboxes for the days when you want to allow only priority interruptions and touch DONE.

  3. Touch Start time

  4. Touch the up or down arrows and AM or PM to set the time your device will begin allowing only priority interruptions and then touch OK.

  5. Touch End time.

  6. Touch the up or down arrows and AM or PM to set the time your device will stop allowing only priority interruptions and then touch OK.

Change Your Interruptions Setting

Using the Quick Panel

Once you have configured your Interruptions options, you can quickly change the setting using the Quick Panel shortcut.

Using two fingers slightly separated, swipe from the top of the screen to the bottom to access the Quick Panel.

By default, all notification sounds and vibrations will be allowed, and the Interruptions shortcut will display as Always interrupt. Touch the shortcut to switch to Priority only.

Using the Volume Keys

  2. Touch VIBRATE or SOUND and select All or Priority only to choose your Interruptions setting.

  3. When you select Priority only, choose how long you want to use this setting. Touch SETTINGS to open the Interruptions settings.
