A PC that is running slowly is one of the most vague issues to troubleshoot, and advanced techniques to identify the specific app causing the problem (such as trial and error and process of elimination), and therefore avoid having to perform a full factory reset, are beyond the scope of this guide. This guide will primarily focus on confirming whether the PC's hardware is or isn't the source of the issue.

Check for apps using a lot of resources.

  • Press CTRL + ALT + DEL and then select Task Manager.
  • Look for processes that are using a large percentage of resources, especially CPU or Memory.
  • If you are not actively using resource-heavy apps you can select their name and then select End task to shut them down.

Keep everything up to date.

Check your storage.

If you are running out of storage space, programs will have difficulty running. Windows has a built-in tool to help you free up disk space.

Reboot the PC.

  • Select the Start Menu.
  • Select the Power icon.
  • Select Restart.

Restore the PC to its factory settings.

A complete restore to the factory state will remove any software that may be interfering with the normal operation of your PC. Don't forget to back up your data before performing the complete restore.

Request service.
