Samsung smart watch will not hold charge or power on

If your watch's battery is completely discharged, it will not power on. You'll need to charge it before turning it on. If the watch will not power on, it doesn't seem to charge, or the light on the charger blinks, the problem could be anything from the battery, connection, the charger, or the watch itself.

Reboot your Samsung smart watch

Note
Available features, menu options, and settings may vary by the watch and software version.
1
Press and hold the Power key until "Rebooting..." displays.

To force a reboot on your watch, press and hold the Home key (Power key) and Back key at the same time until "Rebooting..." displays. Do not select Power off on the screen or Restart when it appears.

The length of time you need to hold down the buttons varies by device. On some watch models, it may take up to 30 seconds for "Rebooting..." to appear.

2
Release the Power key, and wait for the watch to reboot.

When the Rebooting message appears, release the keys you were holding down. The watch screen will go dark, and then the watch will reboot.

If the watch is connected to your phone, the devices will temporarily disconnect during the reboot.

3
Check for software updates.
If you're rebooting your watch to fix a problem, be sure to check for software updates on your watch and the Galaxy Wearable app, including device plugins, once the reboot is complete.
4
Request service if the watch is damaged.
If the watch cannot restart due to physical damage, like a stuck button, please visit the Service Center to request service.

Charge your Samsung smart watch

Important
The actual charge time may vary depending on the charger's condition and the watch's state. Only use Samsung-approved USB cables, wall-adapters, and wireless charging docks specifically designed for your watch. Unapproved chargers or cables can also cause damage.
1
Verify you have the right charging dock.
Note
The Galaxy Watch6 series, Watch5 series, Watch4 series, Watch3, Galaxy Watch Active, Active2, Galaxy Watch, Gear Sport, and Gear S3 support QI wireless charging.

Make sure you are using the charging dock that is designed for your watch's model. Otherwise, it may not charge properly. For example, the Galaxy Watch Active cannot properly charge or may not charge at all on the charging dock for the original Galaxy Watch.

2
Set up the wireless charging dock.
Connect the charging dock to an approved Samsung wall adapter. Make sure you are using the same dock as the one that was included with your watch.
3
Charge the watch.

Place the watch on the appropriate charging dock. However, if you're using a Wireless Charging Duo Stand or Wireless Charging Pad, lay the watch flat on the charging surface with the screen facing up.

Some metal watch bands may interfere with charging, causing poor charging speed or excess heat. Remove the band while charging if you encounter these issues.

Allow the watch to charge for at least 1 hour. If the watch's charging indicator doesn't appear on the display, press the Home key (Power key) once.

  • If a charging error occurs, the charger's LED will flash red or the watch screen will display a message. Remove the watch from the charger, and then properly place it back on the center of the charging surface.
  • If the watch heats up while charging and powering on, disconnect the watch from the charger and close any running apps. Wait until the watch cools off before charging it again.
  • Using the watch while charging may cause the battery to charge more slowly. Some features may be unavailable.
4
Power on the watch.

After the watch has charged for 1 hour, remove it from the charging dock. If the watch is powered off, press the Home key (Power key) to power it on.

  • If the watch powers on, it needed to be charged. If it isn’t fully charged, power it off and then reconnect it to the wireless charging dock.
  • If the watch fails to power on or charge after performing the troubleshooting steps above, the watch and charging dock will need service. Please visit the Support Center to request service.

Inspect the wireless charging dock for your Samsung smart watch

Important
Only use Samsung-approved chargers, batteries, and cables specifically designed for the watch. For example, the Galaxy Watch Active cannot properly charge on the charging dock designed for the Galaxy Watch. Unapproved chargers or cables can also cause the watch to not properly charge or damage it.
1
Inspect the charging dock for physical damage.

The first thing you should do if you are experiencing issues with the charging dock is inspect it for any physical damage. This includes liquid damage, a cracked or lifted case, and broken or bent parts.

  • Inspect the USB cable, and watch for physical and liquid damage.
  • If the wireless charging dock or the back of the watch is dirty, clean it with a soft, dry cloth.
  • If there are obstructions between the watch and the charging dock, the watch may not charge properly.
  • For charging docks that have the LED indicator, the LED will flash red when a charging error occurs. Disconnect the watch from the dock and then reconnect it.
  • Connecting the charger improperly may cause serious damage to the watch and the charging dock. The USB connection should be firm, with very little mobility.
2
Replace or service for your charging dock.
Note
Depending on the situation and the warranty status, fees may apply.
If the  charging dock is not damaged, service is required. You will need to send in both the watch and charging dock. However, if the charging dock is damaged, you must replace it. Please visit Samsung.com to purchase a new one or our Support Center to request service.
