Samsung washing machine or laundry smells bad

When your Samsung washer or laundry has a musty, moldy, or foul odor, it’s important to address the source quickly. Odors can be caused by improper drain hose setup, detergent buildup, or leaving wet clothes in the machine. Routine cleaning, proper detergent use, and drying the washer can help eliminate odors and prevent them from returning.

Washing machine has a burning smell
1
Understand and address the burning smell in washing machines.

The insulating coating on the coils in the washer's motor may produce a burning or unusual smell on the first couple of cycles. After that, the odor will go away.

However, if a burning smell occurs after the first two cycles, visit our Support Center to request service.

Important
Do not remove the screw on the back of the washer that holds the drain hose against the washer. If the screw has been removed, screw it and the holder back in with any screw that fits. If the holder is missing, service is required.
1
Resolve sulfur or sewage smell in washing machines.

If a sulfur or sewage odor can be smelled, the drain hose is inserted too far down the drain or standpipe, and drained water is siphoning back into the washer. Pull the drain hose out, clean the end of the hose if necessary, and then reinsert the drain hose no more than eight inches into the drain or standpipe. Make sure to secure the drain hose to prevent the issue from recurring.

1
Run a Spin-only cycle.

Make sure there is not any laundry in the tub, and remove any remaining water in the tub by running a Spin-only cycle.

Note: Normally, you would not add bleach to a Self Clean cycle that you are running as part of routine maintenance. This procedure is only for if there is a mildew smell or visible mold.

2
Add chlorine bleach.

Pour liquid chlorine bleach into the detergent compartment and fill it to the max line. Do NOT use the bleach compartment.

Caution: Never run a Self Clean cycle with laundry in the tub because this can damage the washer and the contents of the tub.

7
Clean the pump filter (front load models only).

Most front loaders have a pump filter on the front, near the bottom, behind a panel.

If the pump filter is not cleaned regularly, it will cause odors. See our guide for cleaning a washer for instructions cleaning the pump filter.

1
Prevent odors in washing machines through proper maintenance.

Other than a burning smell, the washer itself is not capable of creating an odor, and any other type of odor is not an issue with the washer. Instead, it is an issue with how the washer is being maintained, and service is not required.

The steps below should be performed routinely to prevent odors.

2
Level the washer.
Water and laundry additives do not drain properly when the washer is not leveled, leaving residue which over time causes odors. The washer should be leveled during installation, and periodically checked to confirm that the washer has not become unleveled.

3
Confirm the drain hose is not inserted too far.

Drain Hose Tips

A drain hose inserted more than 6 inches into the home's stand pipe can cause mold and bacteria to accumulate and even siphon back up to the washer. Make sure the drain hose is not inserted further than 6 inches, and is secured so it will not slip down.

Many other requirements relate to installing the drain hose correctly, as well. See the full list in your user manual.

4
Check your load size.

An overloaded washer does not remove the proper amount of moisture from the clothes. The excess moisture can remain in the washer, causing odors.

An underloaded washer often has excess detergent residue left over (see next step).

5
Monitor your detergent use and and avoid softener.

Note: Do not exceed the MAX line in the detergent drawer or use more than the amount recommended by the detergent's manufacturer for your load size. If the recommended amount would exceed the MAX line, use a more concentrated detergent or reduce the size of your load.

Overuse of detergent not only wastes money without getting the laundry any cleaner, but also causes soap scum buildup in the outer tub, which eventually causes odors. Failure to use HE detergent will also cause excessive buildup. This can lead to vibration, extended cycle time length, and potentially damage to your washer. Powdered detergent is less likely to cause this buildup, so it is recommended above liquid detergent.

Using fabric softener will also cause this buildup. Use dryer sheets in the dryer or a little distilled white vinegar in the washer instead.

To see if the washer has this residue, run an empty cycle with no additives. If suds appear, this residue is in the washer. Continue to run empty cycles until suds no longer appear. This will reduce or eliminate odor and improve the performance of the washer.

6
Remove your clothes as soon as possible after the cycle is complete.
Clothes that sit in the washer for a long time after a wash cycle has finished will leave moisture in the washing machine. This is one of the most common sources of odors, also causing the odor to get into your clothing, and in extreme cases allows mold or bacteria to grow directly on the clothing.

7
Dry the washer after each use.

After removing the clothing, take a minute or so to wipe out the detergent drawer, tub and door seal with a clean, dry cloth. All these areas are good at trapping moisture (especially the rubber door seal on front load washers) and should be kept as dry as possible.

You can also leave the door open to assist with drying any spots you were unable to reach.

Note: Periodically, the detergent drawer will need a thorough cleaning and not just a simple wipe. The amount of detergent buildup will determine how often the drawer needs to be cleaned.

11
Run cleaning cycles.

Sanitize Cycle

The Sanitize cycle (for applicable models) will use exceptionally hot water, which can help to clean the inside of the tub. When running the cycle, up to 6 cups of distilled white vinegar or bleach may be added directly into the tub to assist in eliminating odors. Multiple cycles may be necessary to remove stubborn odors.

Self Clean, Self Clean +, and Pure Cycle

This feature is specially designed to help keep the washer clean. This should be run approximately once a month or every 30-40 loads. The washer has an indicator that will flash automatically to remind you to run this after enough cycles have been run.

The length of this cycle will vary depending on the size of the washer. Front load washers often take up to four hours while top load models take typically around one hour.
