Use Child Lock to prevent accidental use of your Samsung washer and dryer
Washers and dryers are essential in most homes, but they can also be a safety concern if you have young children around. Samsung washers and dryers include a Child Lock feature that helps keep curious hands safe. When activated, Child Lock disables most of the control panel buttons, except essentials like Power. On many models, it also locks the door, which stays locked even if the washer is restarted. If you need to add more laundry, you can turn off Child Lock briefly, load your items, and turn it back on once you are ready.
Note:
- Applies to Canadian models: The recommendations in this guide apply to Samsung washers and dryers sold in Canada. Available settings and layout may vary by model and country.
- Child Lock stays on: Even after the washer powers off, Child Lock will remain active until it is manually turned off.
- Front load door locking: On front load washers, Child Lock also locks the door. If the door won’t open after turning off Child Lock, the current cycle may still be running.
Identify your washer or dryer type
First, you need to identify the kind of washer or dryer you have. Samsung produces 2 kinds: traditional washers or dryers or modern ones (Bespoke models). Check the navigation dial, if you can see the long list of available cycles around it (and your washer or dryer has multiple buttons), you are using a traditional washer or dryer. Otherwise, you have a Bespoke model.
Find the Child Lock buttons on a traditional model
Child Lock is activated by pressing a specific two-button combination, which is labeled on the control panel. In some cases, you’ll see the words Child Lock with lines or indicators pointing to the correct buttons. On other models, a small Child Lock icon shows which buttons to use.
On most Samsung models, the Child Lock combination uses the two buttons on the left side, below the digital display. Below, you'll find several examples to help you identify them. If you're still unsure which buttons to press, refer to your user manual for the exact combination.
Bespoke model
On Bespoke models, Child Lock is not activated with button combinations. Instead, it’s available as a setting in the Options menu on the control panel.
Once you've identified the button combination for your traditional Samsung washer or dryer, or found the Child Lock option on your Bespoke model, turning the feature on or off is quick and easy (if you're not sure which model you have or need additional information, refer to the first section above).
Traditional Samsung model
Note: On some models, Child Lock includes a “Temporary off” feature. To fully turn it off, press and hold both buttons once until the icon starts flashing. Then, press and hold them again until the icon turns off completely. For detailed steps, refer to your user manual.
Bespoke model
Note: When Child Lock is on, all buttons are disabled except for Power and Options. The appliance door also locks. If you tap any other button while Child Lock is active, an alarm will sound and a "Child Lock On" message will appear.
Here are some additional details to help you use the Child Lock feature more effectively:
- Functionality may vary by model: The buttons used to activate or deactivate Child Lock, and the buttons that remain functional while it is on, can vary depending on your model and whether a cycle is running.
- Top load door behavior: On some top load washers, Child Lock does not lock the door. If Child Lock is on and the lid is opened while there is an unsafe amount of water inside, the washer will automatically drain to a safe level. To avoid draining, disable Child Lock before opening the lid.
- Restarting does not turn off Child Lock: Powering off and on again will not disable Child Lock. It must be turned off manually.
- FlexWash and FlexDry models: These appliances have separate Child Lock settings for each control panel.
- Temporary off behavior: On many models, a “Temporary off” setting is available. This causes the Child Lock icon to flash and unlocks the door. After one minute, Child Lock automatically re-engages and locks the door again. If the door remains open after one minute, an alarm will sound for two minutes. If the door is closed in time, Child Lock stays on. If not, it will turn off.
