Using the right detergent in your washing machine can make a big difference in the cleanliness of your clothes. However, it's essential to understand the type of detergent, the correct amount, and where to place it. If you're looking for answers on how to use detergent effectively in your Samsung washer, you've come to the right place.

Note: The information provided applies to washers sold in Canada. Screens and settings may vary for washing machines sold in other countries.

Choosing the right detergent is crucial for your Samsung washing machine. It requires High Efficiency (HE) detergent. You have the flexibility to pick your preferred brand, as long as it's an HE detergent. If you're unhappy with your detergent's performance, consider switching to another HE detergent. Whether you choose powdered or liquid detergent, their cleaning effectiveness is generally the same. However, keep in mind that powder can be less soluble in cold water, while liquid detergent can be used for stain pretreatment, though overuse should be avoided.

Caution: Avoid regular, organic, natural, or HE detergents with natural ingredients (e.g., vinegar or baking soda) as they can harm your washing machine.

Determining the appropriate detergent amount depends on your load size and the type of detergent you're using. Some detergent bottles provide guidelines, and their caps can act as measuring cups. Always follow these recommendations to avoid using too much detergent. HE detergent is highly concentrated, so you won't need as much. If you're dissatisfied with your detergent's performance, try a different one rather than increasing the amount. Using excessive detergent can lead to washer buildup and performance issues. Some Samsung washers come with auto dispensers to ensure accurate detergent and softener measurements.

Important: Avoid exceeding the MAX line in your washing machine's detergent drawer to prevent damage to your clothes and the washer.

The way you add detergent depends on your Samsung washer type:

Flex Wash washer

The upper washer uses an Aqua Pebble to release detergent. Fill it with detergent (avoid exceeding the MAX line) and place it in the tub.

The lower washer has a detergent compartment on the left side.

Top Load washer

Open the lid and then pull out the detergent drawer. Then, add liquid detergent to the liquid detergent cup, in the main compartment.

For powdered detergent, follow the same steps, adding it directly to the compartment.

HE detergent pods can be used in your washer. Simply toss them into the tub or drum instead of using the detergent drawer.

Note: Avoid using detergent pods in the top washer on the Flex Wash model, as it's too small for them to work correctly.

For the cleanest clothes, follow these tips:

 • Sorting: Separate your laundry into white, color, and bedding piles. Check garment care tags for specific washing instructions.

 • Pre-treating and pre-soaking: Use color-safe liquid detergent to pre-treat stains. Many Samsung washing machines offer pre-soak and prewash options.

 • Loading: Don't overload your washer, and adjust the detergent amount based on load size.

By following these guidelines, you'll ensure your Samsung washer effectively cleans your clothes while prolonging its lifespan.

If detergent or additives remain in the drawer after a cycle, use the steps below to prevent or correct the issue:

1 Make sure the washer is level

If the washer is not level, the detergent drawer may tilt, preventing the siphons from working correctly. The washer should be leveled during installation and checked again if it shifts over time.

2 Clean the detergent drawer

Detergent residue and fabric softener buildup can clog the siphons and prevent proper draining. Remove the drawer and clean it regularly to avoid buildup.

3 Check the MAX line when using liquid detergent

If you use liquid detergent, make sure the blue tray is inserted into the detergent drawer. Also confirm that the MAX line cap is pushed all the way down.

This allows leftover water and additives to drain properly. If the detergent or additives are too thick, you may dilute them with water, but do not exceed the MAX line. You can also try switching to a different detergent if the issue continues.

Note: This step applies to liquid detergent only.

4 Run a rinse and spin cycle

Run a rinse and spin cycle without adding detergent. This flushes water through the detergent drawer and siphons to remove excess residue.

If you see soap bubbles during the cycle, this indicates leftover detergent is being cleared out. Continue running additional rinse and spin cycles until no bubbles appear.

This process helps keep the washer clean, improves performance, and reduces odors. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for detergent amounts based on load size.

To ensure detergent dispenses at the right time, always check the MAX line when filling the detergent drawer. Overfilling may trigger the drawer’s siphon system and cause detergent to flow into the tub early. It’s also important that the washer is level so the detergent drawer operates properly.

1 Do not exceed the MAX line

When using the detergent drawer, always keep detergent, bleach, or softener below the MAX line. Filling past this line can activate the drawer’s siphon system and cause the additive to drain into the tub before the cycle starts.

Some additives do not use the detergent drawer. For example, when adding bleach to certain top load washers, there is no MAX line, and the additive may drain out of sight immediately. This is normal and does not indicate a problem.

If the amount needed would exceed the MAX line, use a more concentrated product or reduce the load size.

Note: This guidance applies only to additives added through the detergent drawer.

2 Clean the detergent drawer

The detergent drawer needs periodic cleaning. Detergent residue or softener buildup can mix with newly added additives and make it appear as though the MAX line has been exceeded, which may cause the drawer to drain early.

3 Level your washer

Double-check that your Samsung washer is level. The user manual provides specific instructions for leveling your appliance.

If the washer is not level, the detergent drawer may tilt. This can cause additives to flow past the MAX line and drain into the tub as soon as the drawer is closed.

4 Replace the detergent drawer

If additives continue to drain immediately after completing the previous steps, the detergent drawer itself may be worn or damaged. In this case, a replacement may be required.
