There's an even better way to use your SmartThings devices - with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. You'll be able to control SmartThings devices such as the Smart Plug around your smart home with nothing but your voice.

Note: The information provided applies to devices sold in Canada. Available screens and settings may vary for phones sold in other countries. For security reasons, Amazon Alexa will only support Routines with lighting, switch, and thermostat devices.

Before you can have Google Assistant control your SmartThings devices, you need to set up Google Assistant in general.

  1. On your phone, open Settings, and then search for and select Voice Match.

  2. To turn on Voice Match, tap the switch next to Hey Google.

  3. Hey Google switched on with a Galaxy phone

  4. Tap Next, and then tap I Agree.

  5. View the on-screen instructions, and then tap Continue. Now, if you say "Hey Google" even if your screen is off, you can access your Assistant.

  6. To turn off Voice Match, simply tap the switch next to it.

To begin your Google smart home journey, you'll need to link the SmartThings app and Google Assistant together. Once linked, Google Assistant will be able to control any permitted SmartThings devices.

  1. On your phone, touch and hold Home to launch Google Assistant. Then, swipe up to open the dashboard.

  2. Tap the Options icon (your account picture), and then swipe to and tap Devices.

  3. Tap Add a device.

  4. Add a device highlighted on a Galaxy phone

  5. Tap Link a device, and then search for and select SmartThings. Next, follow the on-screen instructions to sign into your Samsung account and link your account when prompted.

  6. Tap Authorize. All of your connected devices in SmartThings should link up to your Google Assistant. Now, test it out to see if it works.

  7. Touch and hold Home to launch Google Assistant, and then say a command. For example, you could say "Turn off the Smart Plug."

Note: Google Assistant will only be able to control the devices that are registered to the SmartThings location you choose.

You can remove Google from SmartThings at any time if you're no longer using it.

  1. Open the SmartThings app, and then tap Menu (the three horizontal lines).

  2. Then, tap the Settings icon in the top right, and tap Linked services.

  3. Next, tap More options (the three vertical dots), and then tap Delete.

  4. Tap the red minus icon next to Google, and then tap Delete to confirm.

The SmartThings app works with Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, and Amazon Tap smart speakers. Alexa can be used to control light bulbs, on/off switches, dimmer switches, thermostats, locks, and Routines configured with SmartThings. Alexa can also check the status of motion and contact sensors. But first, you'll need to connect the Alexa app to SmartThings.

  1. To begin, download the Amazon Alexa app, and then set up your Amazon Alexa device.

  2. Open the Alexa app; if needed, verify your account and allow the different permissions.

  3. Tap the Devices tab, and then swipe to and tap YOUR SMART HOME SKILLS.
