Frequently Asked Questions

Teachers should refer to this page for more detailed information about the contest.

Which schools are eligible to participate in the contest?
All publicly financed 6 – 12 schools are eligible to participate. Charter schools that derive at least 50% of their operating funds from public sources are also eligible.
Do I have to be a STEM teacher?
No, this contest is open to ALL teachers regardless of the subject taught. However, the topic of this contest does focus on STEM focused solutions.
Does class size affect eligibility?
No, class size is not a factor. However, we have seen more success with groups that involve more than one student.
How do I know the status of my application?
You will receive a confirmation email after submission. You may also check in on your application status by logging into your Samsung account on samsung.com/solve.
How do I know if I am selected to move on to the next phase of the contest?
The Samsung team will communicate to you our decision at every phase through email and/or phone. You may also log in to your Samsung account on samsung.com/solve. For finalist or winner announcement dates, please refer to the Official Rules below.
Do I have to break the class up into groups or can this be an exercise for the whole class?
How you divide your classes is entirely up to you. In the past, group sizes have ranged between 4-60 students. You should do what works best for your teaching style and the dynamic of your class. However, participating students must be in 6th-12th grade.
What is included in the State Winner video kit prize package?
Video kit packages vary, but all packages are designed to help student groups product project videos for the State Winner contest submission. Video kit packages are set, and cannot be customized.
Do I have to return the equipment provided?
No, all prize packages are your school’s to keep!
Which four travelers can attend the Final Event(s) for the contest if my school is named a National Finalist or National Winner?
The project lead teacher and/or school must decide on the four travelers that will attend to best represent your school project. Be sure to comply with your school’s policies and guidelines regarding travel arrangements, student supervision, privacy, and rules. We suggest one of two group options: two teachers with two students, or one teacher with three students. Please Note: Additional students, faculty, chaperones, parents, and guests beyond the four designated travelers will not be able to join any events during this week. We recommend your teams show support by cheering on the school representatives from home.
