How do I use Motion and Gestures to control my Samsung Galaxy S4?

Motion Settings

The motion settings let you control your device with natural movements of the device or by moving or touching the screen.

To access the motion settings, from the Home screen, touch Menu > Settings > My device. Touch Motions and gestures and touch either Motion or Palm motion.

Motions

Touch the slider off to turn Motions on. There are five different types of motions. Touch the slider off next to a gesture to turn it on. Touch the gesture name for a quick tutorial on how to use the gesture. You can also try using the gesture by touching Try it.

  • Direct call: When viewing a contact's details, message details, or call details from the log, place the device to your ear to initiate a call to the contact or phone number.

  • Smart alert: When you pick up your device, you will be notified if you have any missed calls or messages.

  • Zoom: Touch and hold two points on the screen when viewing a picture or a website, and tilt your device back and forth to zoom in or out. To set the zoom sensitivity, touch Zoom > Try it. Move the slider in either direction to adjust the sensitivity level.

  • Browse an image: When you are viewing a picture while zoomed in, touch a point on the screen and move your device up, down, left, or right to pan around the picture. To set the sensitivity, touch Browse an image > Try it. Move the slider in either direction to adjust the sensitivity level.

  • Mute/pause: When activated, turning the device over will mute incoming calls and media playback.

Palm Motion

Touch the slider off to turn Palm motion on. There are two different types of palm motions. Touch the slider off next to a gesture to turn it on. Touch the gesture name for a quick tutorial on how to use the gesture. You can also try using the gesture by touching Try it.

  • Capture screen: Capture a screenshot by swiping the screen from right to left, or vice versa, with the side of your hand.

  • Mute/pause: Mute or pause media playback by covering the screen with your hand.
