Set Up and Connect the ADT Motion Detector

Connect the ADT Motion Detector to SmartThings

Meet yet another tool in your arsenal to help you stay safe in your home: the ADT Motion Detector. When you use the motion detector, you can sleep better at night knowing you'll be alerted by the SmartThings app in the event of any strange movements throughout your home. Total protection and peace of mind, too.

Motion Detector

Use the ADT Motion Detector in a high-traffic area where an intruder would be likely to pass within a 30-foot range, such as a living room or hallway.

Afraid of things that go bump in the night? Set up your ADT Motion Detector and be alerted of unusual movements throughout your home.

Take the ADT Motion Detector to the area where you intend to mount it. Make sure you are within 350 feet of the ADT Security Hub. Pick a location 6.5 to 7.5 feet above the floor and mount the detector on a flat wall or in a corner.

On your phone, navigate to and open the SmartThings app. Then, touch Menu, and navigate to the Location where the ADT hub is saved. Touch Add (the plus sign), and then touch Add device. Under Brands, touch ADT, and then touch ADT security devices.

Select ADT Motion Sensor from the list of devices. Use your phone’s camera to scan the sensor’s QR code, which is located inside the sensor’s back cover. If the QR code isn’t working, touch ADD DEVICE BY CODE and enter the code manually. It can be found next to the QR code or in the user manual. Then, follow the on-screen instructions to finish connecting the sensor to SmartThings. When it’s connected, you can mount the motion detector on the wall.

For best results, make sure:

  • There are no objects blocking the detector’s view and it’s in a stable location.

  • The detector is not aimed at stairs, furniture, or other surfaces where a pet might climb, or used in a room where large pets over 55 pounds may be present and could cause false alarms.

  • The detector is not placed near a source of heat that could cause false alarms, like a heating vent or fireplace.

Make sure you test the coverage of the detector by pressing the Walk Test button on the side. For the next 10 minutes, the red LED will illuminate when it senses movement, allowing you to adjust the aim of the detector using a screwdriver so it covers the desired protection area.
