Frequently asked questions
What is the migration process actually doing to my account?
The migration process is a simple and secure way to transfer settings from your account settings, Routines, Smart Home Monitor, and Smart Locks into the new app. If you choose not to migrate these settings, you can still use the new app.
Smart Locks is now Smart Lock Guest Access.
Routines are now Scenes and Custom Automations.
Smart Home Monitor is now SmartThings Home Monitor and includes Video Home Monitoring with the SmartThings Camera.

You can transition by using these steps:
Open the SmartThings Classic app and tap the Migrate this location now banner.
Follow the on-screen instructions; when you’re ready, tap Migrate.
Download the new SmartThings app.
If you have multiple Locations, you will need to repeat this process for each Location. If you cannot see the banner yet, please be patient and keep an eye out! We are rolling out slowly in groups to ensure the smoothest transition.
Why can’t I see the app transition banner?
The app transition tool should now be available for all supported users. If you do not see the transition banner in your SmartThings Classic app, please try the options below.
Ensure you have the latest version of the SmartThings Classic app version 2.20. If not, update the app using the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Log out of both the SmartThings Classic app and new SmartThings app.
Log back into both apps and confirm if the banner is now visible.
If you still do not see the banner, contact Customer Support.
How is the new SmartThings app different from SmartThings Classic?
We’ve been hard at work adding the features you love from SmartThings Classic into the new SmartThings app. It supports a modern interface, more Works With SmartThings devices, and powerful Custom Automations. As we bring together Samsung and SmartThings IoT services, we are ensuring that all of the features you love are in the new app.
Can I continue using the SmartThings Classic app after the migration process?
After migration, you will be able to edit and control some of your existing Classic settings in the new SmartThings app.
Some features in the SmartThings Classic app will no longer be available:
Creating new Routines in SmartThings Classic
Editing or viewing old Routines in SmartThings Classic
Adding, viewing, or managing Lock Code Manager in SmartThings Classic
Adding, viewing, or managing Smart Home Monitor in SmartThings Classic
You will still be able to control devices in the SmartThings Classic app. We are working to offer you a complete smart home experience in a single app. While you can continue to use Classic for now, we encourage you to check out the new app!
Why isn’t my mobile presence working in the new app?
The SmartThings app uses a new method for managing geofences and mobile presence. Due to this, your classic mobile presence cannot automatically migrate to the new SmartThings app. To ensure a smooth transition to the new SmartThings app, enable mobile presence and update your Automations to use this new mobile presence.
Before beginning this process, we recommend ensuring you have successfully transitioned your SmartThings Classic settings using the Classic transition tool. First, enable the new SmartThings app to use your phone as a presence sensor.
Open the new SmartThings app. Tap Menu (the three horizontal lines).
Tap the Settings icon.
Tap the switch for Get your location from this phone to turn it on.
Tap Allow in Settings to grant SmartThings permission to access your location information.
Open the new SmartThings app. Tap Menu (the three horizontal lines).
Select the Automation you would like to edit.
Select Add (the plus sign) under the If section.
Choose Member Location. If you have not already set your Geolocation, you will need to do so now by following the prompts.
Set your Member Location action and then select Allow.
Tap Next and then tap Save to finish your setup.
Next, review any Automations and SmartApps that involve mobile presence and ensure they are using the mobile presence from the new SmartThings app.
Repeat this process for any Automations and SmartApps that require this change.
Lastly, uninstall the SmartThings Classic app or delete your Classic mobile presence in the Things list to remove the Classic app’s mobile presence.
Why are my devices not displaying properly in the new app?
If some devices are missing, please contact SmartThings Customer Support for assistance. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org (US) / email@example.com (UK) / firstname.lastname@example.org (Canada) or call 1-800-SAM-SUNG.
If your devices appear but are not displaying correctly, this is due to the differences in how custom devices are handled in the new SmartThings app. We confirmed that 95 percent of the most popular community integrations will work in the new SmartThings app. We recommend contacting the developer of your community integration for migration support.
If you are the developer and find one of your custom devices is not working, check out Community Tutorials for more information on Custom UI Metadata. Stay tuned to our Developer Workspace for information about new platform features.
Where is my favorite feature in the new app?
Most features, including your devices and SmartApps, already synchronize across both apps - all you need to do is log in with your Samsung account. A few other features operate a bit differently in the new SmartThings app.
Here are some things that have changed:
Devices and Rooms: Easily access devices from the Dashboard. You can select grouped devices into rooms and favorites to appear on the dashboard or window shade menu (Android only) for quicker access. You can group lights or cameras to control them all at once.
Automations and Scenes: SmartApps, Routines, and Scenes in Classic are now grouped into Automations and Scenes. The new Custom Automation builder allows you to build unique and complex automations without scrolling through SmartApps.
Samsung Experience: Deep integrations in the new app allow you to control your Samsung TVs and appliances, SmartThings WiFi, and other smart home devices all from one app. Can’t find the TV remote? Just use your SmartThings app. (Not all features available on all models.)
Why should I switch to the new SmartThings app?
The new SmartThings app offers most of the same features as Classic with a new and improved interface as well as powerful custom automations, a massive device ecosystem, and much more!
I haven't upgraded to a Samsung account yet! Am I locked out of using the new app?
Once you upgrade to a Samsung account, all of your devices will start appearing in the new app. If you have not made the switch yet, you can do it while updating your Routines, Smart Home Monitor, and Smart Locks to the new app. In the SmartThings Classic app, tap the migration banner and you will be directed to update to a Samsung account before getting started. You must upgrade to a Samsung account in order to use the new SmartThings app.
I've built my own device integrations, automations, or both. Will all of my customizations work in the new app?
Most of your custom integrations will continue working in the new SmartThings app. If you find one of your custom devices is not working, check out our new Developer Workspace for more information on Custom UI Metadata. Stay tuned to our Developer Workspace for news about brand-new open platform features.
I'm having trouble with migration. How can I get help?
What about my shared users?
The transition process is only required for location owners - shared users do not need to take any action to complete the transition.
Some shared users may still need to upgrade to a Samsung account. These users will see an Account Notice banner in the Classic app where they can begin the upgrade. After completing the Samsung account setup process, shared users can simply log into the new SmartThings app with their Samsung account to view the shared locations.
Shared user settings can be found under Members in the menu of the new SmartThings app.
I don't see the new SmartThings app in my app store. What should I do?
The new SmartThings app is compatible with Android devices (5.0 and higher) and iOS devices (10 and higher).
