How to Troubleshoot Low or No Audio on Your Samsung TV

Last Update date : 2024-01-10

Even if the picture on your TV is stunning, you won't enjoy your favorite show or movie to the fullest extent without good sound. Fortunately, even though sound dropout might be annoying, your screen is rarely to blame. To start, use the built-in sound test on your TV. Then, to find and fix the problem, check the ports and connections on both your TV and the device it's connected to.

Try turning up the volume to see if it helps if your TV is having audio problems.

1 Using your TV’s remote, press the Volume up button.
2 If you cannot see the volume displayed on the screen, navigate to Settings, then select Sound, and then select Sound Output. Select TV Speaker. You will now be able to see the volume displayed on the screen.
3 If your TV is connected to an external device, you can check the volume settings on the device as well.

To check for audio problems automatically, use the Sound Test feature on your TV.

1 On your TV, navigate to Settings, then select Support, then select device care and then Self Diagnosis
2 Select Sound Test and wait for the test to finish.
3 If the test reveals a problem, you can try resetting the sound. From Settings, select Sound, then select Expert Settings, and then select Reset Sound.

Updating your TV’s software may fix audio issues, including sound dropout.

1 On your TV, navigate to Settings, and then select Support.
2 Select Software Update. You can refer to our guide for more information about updating your TV’s software.
3 Updating the software on any external devices linked to your TV is also a good idea.

Note: Only when the problem started with the previous software update is it necessary to check for updates.

There is an HDMI cable test on some TVs. You might need to update the software first if your model doesn't include this test. Please go on to the next stage if the test does not display after the software update or if your TV is not HDMI-connected.

The test is intended for HDMI cords that are less than 2 meters long, so results from longer cords might not be reliable. It is not intended to work with soundbars or home theatre systems; rather, it is only intended for devices that include a video signal.

1 Make sure the HDMI port for the cable you are going to test is selected as the TV's source before starting the test.
2 Navigate to Settings, then select Support then Device care, and then select Self Diagnosis.
3 Select HDMI Troubleshooting
4 Select the external device that you want to diagnose.
5 Check that you can see the screen of the connected device without any problems.
6 Check that you can hear sound from the connected device without any problems. Ensure that the connected device is unmuted.
7 If the test finds an issue with the cable, please replace the cable. Service is not required.

Note: In the rare cases where the TV's HDMI port is defective and causing audio dropout, it will typically cause video dropout, too.

A loose connection on your external device or devices can also cause audio dropouts.

1 Make sure the cable connections are undamaged and secured at both ends. If needed, replace the cable.
2 If a different port on your TV is available, reconnect to it instead.
3 If the dropout stops, then reconnect the cable to the original port to confirm if it still experiences dropout. If the dropout happens on one port but not on another.

If you are still experiencing audio issues with your current external device or devices, you can try using a new external device instead.

1 Using the same cables, connect a different device to your TV.
2 If there are no more audio dropouts, then the issue was caused by your previous external device.
3 Contact the previous device’s manufacturer for further assistance.

Note: If the audio continues to drop out after following all of the above steps, kindly contact us to request service.
