Transfer data using Smart Switch

A wireless transfer is the preferred way to copy your data to a new phone. It’s fast and lets you keep your phones plugged into their chargers during the transfer.

1. First, make sure the Smart Switch app is installed on both phones, and plug them into their chargers. When you are ready, place the phones within 4 inches of each other.




2. Launch Smart Switch on both phones. Tap Send data on the old phone, tap Receive data on the new phone, and then tap Wireless on both phones. 




3. On your new phone, you may have to select the type of your old phone. Follow any on-screen instructions, since some types of devices may have additional steps.




4. Next, complete the connection by tapping Allow on the old phone. 




5. On your new phone, choose the content you want to move, and then tap Transfer.
   
   




6. Once the transfer is complete, tap Done on the new phone.

You have lots of valuable data saved on your old iOS phone but transferring it seems like a logistical nightmare. No worries, Smart Switch makes transferring data through iCloud a breeze.

1. Launch Smart Switch on the new Galaxy phone, and then tap Receive data. 




2. Tap Wireless, and then tap iPhone/iPad. Enter your Apple ID and password, and then tap Sign in.
   
   




3. Enter the verification code, and then tap OK.




4. Select the data you want to transfer, tap Import, and then tap Import again.

Note: iTunes music and videos cannot be transferred from iCloud. Unencrypted iTunes music can be transferred to your phone by simply copying the M4A files from a PC with your iTunes library. You can also transfer your music files directly from a computer.

Wired transfer is best for people who do not have a lot of data on their old phone because it does not allow you to keep your phones connected to a charger during the transfer. If you have a lot of data or years' worth of text messages to transfer, then we recommend performing a wireless transfer instead.

Note: A USB-OTG adapter is provided in the box with the Galaxy S10+, S10, S10e, Note10+, Note10+ 5G, and Z Flip.

1. Connect the phones with the old phone's USB cable. Most cables will require you to use a USB-OTG adapter. If you have a Lightning to USB-C or USB-C to USB-C cable you will not need an adapter, as it will plug right into your new Galaxy.




2. Launch Smart Switch on both phones. Tap Send data on the old phone, tap Receive data on the new phone, and then tap Cable on both phones. Smart Switch will scan the old phone for transferrable content.
   
   




3. Select the data you want transferred to the new phone. An estimate of the transfer time will be displayed. If the transfer will take more than an hour you may want to use a wireless transfer so both phones can be charged during the transfer.




4. When you are ready to start, tap Transfer. 




5. When finished, tap Done on the new phone, and tap Close on the old phone.

If you have a large enough capacity microSD card or USB OTG flash drive, you can transfer your data using Smart Switch to back up your old device to the external storage. Before you begin, insert the microSD card or USB OTG storage device into the old phone.

1. Launch Smart Switch on the old phone. Tap the SD card icon in the upper right corner, and then tap Back up. 




2. Select what you want to back up. If there is not enough space on your external storage, you may need to deselect some items, but you can come back later to transfer anything that will not fit. 




3. Tap Back up again. When it is complete, tap Done, and then remove the external storage.




4. Next, insert the external storage into the new Galaxy phone, and then launch Smart Switch. Tap the SD card icon, and then tap Restore.
   
   




5. Select what you want to restore, and then tap Restore again. When it is complete, tap Done.

Note: You can repeat this process as many times as you need to get all your data transferred.

If you have a Windows phone, such as a Blackberry, you can still use Smart Switch to transfer your content.

1. Launch Smart Switch on the new Galaxy phone. 




2. Tap Receive data, then tap Wireless, and then tap Windows Phone/Blackberry.
   
   




3. Next, you will see the steps to download Smart Switch onto your old device. Follow the on-screen prompts to continue. 




4. Once complete, tap Connect on the old phone, and then select the network. Enter the password shown on your new Galaxy phone. 




5. Your data will now be transferred.
