Note:

  • You do not need to take a picture to scan a QR code. Simply point the camera at the QR code and wait for the notification to appear.
  • The notification and the actions that follow may vary depending on the QR code. For example, it may open a website or an app, connect to a Wi-Fi network, or start a file download.
  • Only scan QR codes from sources you trust. Some QR codes may direct you to unsafe websites or download unwanted content.

The Scan QR code feature, available from the Quick settings panel, is designed specifically for scanning QR codes. It provides additional options, such as quick access to the flashlight and more control over the detected QR code before opening it, making it the recommended way to scan QR codes on your Samsung Galaxy.

  • If you cannot find the Scan QR code feature or need help accessing the Quick settings panel, see our guide on customizing the Quick settings panel. You can also scan QR codes using the Camera app as described in the previous section.
  • The Scan QR code feature lets you review the detected QR code before opening it, helping you confirm the destination and choose the action you want to perform. This is why it is the recommended way to scan QR codes on your Samsung Galaxy.
  • The notification and the available actions will vary depending on the QR code.
  • The Scan QR code feature provides quick access to the Flashlight. If your Samsung Galaxy has trouble recognizing a QR code in a dark environment, tap the Flashlight icon in the bottom-left corner to turn it on or off.

If you receive a QR code by email, text message, another app, or if it is displayed on your Samsung Galaxy screen, save it as an image in the Gallery app. If the QR code cannot be saved directly, take a screenshot instead. Once the image is saved, open it in Gallery, then press and hold the QR code until a notification appears. Finally, review the QR code notification, then choose the action you want to perform.

Note:

  • Only scan QR codes from sources you trust. Be especially careful with QR codes received by email, text message, social media or other messaging apps, as they may be used to direct you to fraudulent websites or download unwanted content. If you are unsure about the sender or the purpose of the QR code, do not scan it.
  • The quality of the image may affect QR code recognition. If the QR code is blurry, low-resolution or partially hidden, your Samsung Galaxy may not be able to scan it.
  • The notification and the available actions will vary depending on the QR code.

If your Samsung Galaxy has trouble recognizing a QR code, the issue is usually related to lighting conditions, camera focus, image quality or an internet connection. Try the suggestions below to improve QR code recognition:

  • Make sure the QR code is clear and complete

The entire QR code should be visible and easy to read. If the QR code is blurry, low-resolution, partially hidden or damaged, your Samsung Galaxy may not be able to recognize it. If you are scanning a QR code saved in the Gallery app, make sure the image is clear and high quality.

  • Tap the QR code to improve focus

If the Camera app does not recognize the QR code right away, tap the QR code on the screen. This helps your Samsung Galaxy focus on the correct area and may improve recognition.

  • Improve lighting

Scan the QR code in a well-lit area. If you are using the Scan QR code feature, tap the Flashlight icon to turn it on when additional lighting is needed. Avoid strong reflections or shadows that may make the QR code difficult to read.

  • Adjust the distance

Move your Samsung Galaxy slightly closer to or farther away from the QR code until it comes into focus. If the QR code is displayed on another phone or tablet, increasing that device's screen brightness may also improve recognition.

  • Clean the camera lens

Fingerprints, dust or smudges on the camera lens can make it difficult to focus on the QR code. Wipe the lens gently with a soft, dry cloth before scanning again.

  • Check your internet connection

Some QR codes open websites, download files or access online services. If nothing happens after scanning, make sure your Samsung Galaxy is connected to the internet.

  • You do not need to install another QR code scanner app

Samsung Galaxy devices include built-in tools for scanning QR codes. In most cases, you do not need to install an additional QR code scanner app, helping reduce the need to install apps from unknown sources.

  • Restart your Samsung Galaxy

If your Samsung Galaxy still cannot recognize the QR code after trying the suggestions above, restart your device and try scanning it again.

QR codes provide quick access to websites, files, apps, and other content. While most QR codes are safe to use, it is always a good idea to verify where they lead before interacting with them. Follow the tips below to help protect your personal information and your Samsung Galaxy.

  • Only scan QR codes from trusted sources

Before scanning a QR code, make sure it comes from a person, organization or business you trust. If you receive a QR code unexpectedly, verify its source before scanning it.

  • Review the destination before opening it

Whenever possible, review the website address or other information displayed after scanning the QR code before opening it. If the destination looks unfamiliar or suspicious, do not continue.

  • Be cautious when entering personal information

If a QR code opens a website that asks you to sign in or enter personal, financial or payment information, make sure the website is legitimate before proceeding.

  • Do not install apps unless you trust the source

Some QR codes may direct you to download an app. Only install apps from trusted sources, and make sure you understand why the app is required before installing it.

  • Be cautious of unexpected offers or urgent requests

Be careful if a QR code promises prizes, discounts or asks you to act immediately. Scammers often use urgency to encourage people to act without verifying the destination first.
