Addressing the Ocean’s Biggest, Micro-issue

Take a look into what’s ailing our greatest, most bountiful source of life.

Our Blue, Blessed Mother

The ocean. Our great giver of life, energy and value. We receive so much from our seas, including seabed minerals and various energy resources. Though, no form of energy compares to the sheer amount of food we catch and harvest every year. Civilizations have risen and history has been written all to her bountiful supply. But, beyond the energy we mine and the fish we catch, the ocean is home to countless species of life that make up a powerful yet delicate ecosystem – one that silently governs our planet’s fickle climate. When it’s feeling generous, it may feed us, heal us, and enchant us with its beauty. When it’s not, signs of trouble quickly surface and escalate.

The Massive Issue of Microplastics

As much as we take away, we put into our waters as well. Sadly, our input has not been as helpful as the ocean’s. Take the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It’s a giant collection of marine debris brought together by the currents and wind to form a massive island of…trash. Our trash. Today, sources estimate the garbage island to contain over 1.8 trillion pieces of plastics that form an area of mass around 1.55 million square kilometers, or roughly 600,000 square miles. Without any effective countermeasures taken, it is predicted to only get bigger.

What’s especially alarming are the microplastics – tiny pieces of plastic smaller than 5mm in size. Contrary to the larger plastic waste that may first catch our eyes, the GPGP also largely consists of these microplastics which are very difficult to clean up and cause much harm to marine animals who mistake them for food. It affects the delicate aquatic ecosystems, which in turn will come to affect us in both micro and macro scales.

Our Work Is Cut Out
for Us

Words like giving and receiving may make it seem that the transactional nature of our relationship with the ocean makes us partners.
Make no mistake, we are at her mercy. However intertwined the sea may be to our identity and our way of life, it’s clear that we must be more mindful of our input and impact on the vast, blue ecosystem.

With these issues ingrained deep in our minds at Samsung, we have made structural changes, set new goals and announced new visions to incorporate sustainability at all levels of our impact to the world. Our new Bespoke Life Vision is just one of the examples of our commitment to sustainability. Knowing that Samsung’s prosperity is linked to the prosperity of everyone, it is difficult to move forward without looking at the trace that we leave behind. Having clearly looked at our planet’s current health, Samsung will look to the future with a sense of alertness, responsibility and unwavering hope that we shall learn to truly coexist with Mother Nature.
