Back up a Samsung phone to SD Card

Last modified : Feb 04. 2019

Backing up the content and data on your Samsung phone will make sure you don't lose any important photos, contacts or other documents. There are many different ways to save your information - see our page on How to Back up my Data? for all the options. This page outlines how to save the content on your phone or tablet using the Samsung Smart Switch app, which we normally use to transfer content between two different devices. Smart Switch has the ability to save your data, including photos and contacts, right to a microSD card or USB Flash drive.

While most Samsung devices take a microSD card - there are a couple that don't. In this case, or if you only have a USB flash drive handy - you can follow the steps below but you'll need to attach a USB Flash drive with an OTG Adapter.

Please Note: This process will save the content of your device into a folder that might be difficult to read outside of the Smart Switch app. If you're looking to transfer files individually to an SD card, see the page on Transfer Files to a microSD card for a step-by-step guide. Transferring the files using the My Files app will allow you to read the contents on other devices or computers.

Use Smart Switch to back up to external storage:

1 Open the Smart Switch app

The Samsung Smart Switch app comes preinstalled on lots of Samsung devices - if you can't find it in the Samsung Folder on your phone or tablet, you can download the Smart Switch app from the Google Play Store or the Galaxy Apps store.

2 Tap the microSD icon in the top right
Select the microSD icon in the top right to begin

If you're running an older version of the Smart Switch app, the Backup to External Storage option will be available under the 3 dot menu button.

3 Select Back Up
Select Back Up from the options at the bottom
4 Select the Back Up option to begin
Select Back Up to begin
5 Tap each of the icons to select which content to save to the SD card and select Back Up
Select what content to save and tap the Back Up arrow
6 Smart Switch will save the selected content to the SD card, showing the percentage and time left
Smart Switch will save the selected content to the SD card, showing the percentage and time remaining
7 Once your content has finished saving, you'll be able to select Done to close the Smart Switch app
Select Done to close the app when it's finished backing up your data
