Why do black bars appear on either side of my TV for some content?

Last Update date : Oct 20. 2020

Sometimes while watching your Samsung TV, you will notice black bars appear on either side of the picture or black bars appear on the top and bottom of the picture. This is mostly due to watching SD (Standard Definition) content in HD (High Definition). SD content has a display aspect ratio of 4:3, where HD content has a display aspect ratio of 16:9. The difference in those two ratios is what causes the black bars to appear.

There is an option in your TV settings to change the aspect ratio. Please note that changing the aspect ratio on your TV may remove the black bars, it may also result in part of the content being too big for the screen size and cut off some of the picture.

You can find instructions to change the picture size on a Samsung TV by clicking on the link.
