How to use Smart Switch

Last Update date : Apr 29. 2023

Smart Switch allows you to share content from Android™, Windows™, or iPhone™ devices to your new Galaxy phone quickly, easily and safely with just a few taps on the screen.

How to open Smart Switch on your Galaxy device

Step 1. Go to device settings and tap Accounts and backup.

Step 2. Tap Bring data from old device.

Step 3. Select Cable or Wireless.

Please note: On older Galaxy devices, you may need to download Smart Switch from the Play Store™.

iCloud to Samsung Galaxy device:

1 Launch the Smart Switch app on your Samsung Galaxy device.
2 Tap Receive Data.
3 Tap iPhone/iPad.
4 Tap Get data from iCloud instead (at the bottom of the screen).
5 Enter your Apple ID and password and then tap Sign in to iCloud.
6 Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the data transfer.

Android™ to Galaxy:

1 Download Smart Switch on both devices.
2 Connect the two devices by using a USB cable or having them on the same Wi-Fi network.
3 Launch the Smart Switch app on both devices.
4 On your Samsung Galaxy device, tap Receive Data. Tap Galaxy/Android. Finally, select the connection method: Cable or Wireless.
5 On the Android device (sending data), tap Send Data and select the same connection method that you chose for the receiving device.
6 Return to your Samsung Galaxy device and follow the instructions onscreen to complete the data transfer process.

iPhone to Galaxy (connected with cable):

1 Disable two-factor authentication for your Apple ID before starting the process.
2 Launch the Smart Switch app on your Samsung Galaxy device.
3 Connect the two mobile devices using a Lightning cable and a USB adapter.
4 Tap Receive Data on your Samsung Galaxy device.
5 Tap iPhone/iPad.
6 Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the data transfer.

Smart Switch can be used without a Samsung account.

No, the existing data does not disappear. Even after the transfer is completed, the existing data remains on the previous device.

You can transfer data from a device equipped with an SD card to a device that does not support an SD card. When data is transmitted from a device equipped with a SD card to a device not supported with an SD card, Smart Switch automatically recognises the data stored on the SD card, and the corresponding data item is displayed as a list under the title "SD card content". When selected, data stored on the SD card can be sent to the SD card unsupported device in the same way as other data.

The reason why we ask users for permission when using the Smart Switch app is because of the Google™ OS policy. This is because each app’s data requires permissions for the app to backup/restore.

Smart Switch is installed without an app icon. When the app is updated or reinstalled, icons in the Samsung folder or apps are created.
