Galaxy Note9 - Write Notes in the Dark with Screen Off Memo (SM-N960W)

Sometimes inspiration strikes at the weirdest times, like when you’re lying in bed. But your phone’s bright screen can blind you in the middle of the night. Instead, just use your Galaxy Note9’s Screen off memo feature to write notes without even unlocking your phone.

Screens and settings available may vary depending on your Canadian wireless service provider and your software version.

If you wake up from a dream and have a brilliant idea for a new poem, just take out your Note9 and your S Pen. There are two ways to access Screen off memo on your phone:

  • Remove the S Pen from your phone when the screen is off, and Screen off memo will automatically open.
  • If you already have the S Pen removed, press the S Pen button and then touch the S Pen to your phone’s screen while it is off or locked. Screen off memo will activate and you can jot down your ideas.

When you are done writing, touch SAVE IN NOTES and it will be saved in Samsung Notes. If you don’t finish or don't save a note in Screen off memo, it should appear the next time you use the feature - if you do NOT reinsert your S Pen. If you have an unsaved note and then take out the S Pen, it will open a brand-new note and your old note will be automatically saved to Samsung Notes.

Turn Screen Off Memo On or OffClick to Expand

The Screen off memo feature is turned on by default, so you can jot things down in the spur of the moment. But if you accidentally turned it off, here's how to turn it back on:

Turn Screen Off Memo On or Off

From Settings, search for and select Screen off memo. Touch the slider at the top of the screen to turn the feature on or off. You can also touch the slider next to "Use S Pen signature colour" to write screen off memos in the signature color of your S Pen.

Convert Writing into TextClick to Expand

Type no more! With your S Pen in hand, you can write text directly on your phone's screen. To test it, open any app where you can type with an on-screen keyboard. Hover over the text field with your S Pen, and then select the Direct pen input icon. Your keyboard will turn into a board where you can write with your S Pen.

Direct pen input is enabled by default and can be turned on and off from the S Pen Settings.
