Which Plasma TVs Have PIP (Picture-In-Picture)?

Last Update Date : Apr 09. 2018

Picture-In-Picture

Many Samsung TVs have the single tuner PIP function. Since 2005 there was an industry wide change in the PIP function from a Two Tuner system to a Single Tuner.

•Two Tuner: TV has two built in NTSC tuners, a single coax connection is connected to the TV. The TV can tune in and watch two different basic channels one on the main screen and one on the sub screen, and swap back and forth between them.

TIP: Many providers offer a built in two tuner PIP function with their DVR service. If you would like more information about this please contact your service provider.

    • Single Tuner: TVs can use the HDMI, PC, or Component connection as the Main picture and watch incoming signal from the coax connection as the Sub picture. You are unable to swap the picture from the sub to main; however, you can swap the sound.

Samsung Plasma TVs with the PIP feature are all single tuner PIP. You will need to have an external device connected to HDMI, Component, or PC input in order to use PIP. The most common setup is a cable or satellite set-top box connected to HDMI and second coax connection from a cable or Antenna source to the coax input.

Although A STB is the most common external device to be used with a PIP setup you can also do things like:

    • Play a video game and watch TV through PIP.

    • Work on the computer and watch TV through PIP.

    • Watch a Blu-ray movie and watch TV trough PIP.

Limitation with the single tuner PIP setup are:

1. The sub picture will always be the coax input, if you are using a direct Cable or Antenna connection you will only be able to access the basic channels and no premium channels that require a box.

2. When you swap the sub picture to main it ends the PIP function.

TIP: Many providers offer a built in two tuner PIP function with their DVR service. If you would like more information about this please contact your service provider.
