Set up your Chromebook

Using your Chromebook for the first time involves charging it, turning it on, and performing the initial set up process.

  1. To begin charging your Chromebook, connect an external power supply to the USB Type-C port. For more details about charging your Chromebook, please refer to our charging guide.
  2. Next, turn on your Chromebook by opening the lid; the Chromebook will automatically turn on when the display is opened. However, if it doesn’t turn on, you can press the Power button on the keyboard.

    Note: To turn off the Chromebook, navigate to the status area in the bottom right corner of the screen, and then select the Power icon. Select Shut down.
  3. Next, choose your desired language, keyboard settings, and Wi-Fi network. You will also need to sign into or create a Google account. Your Chromebook will provide on-screen instructions for you to follow.

Sync your Google account data

You can sync photos, videos, emails, files, bookmarks, and more using your Chromebook, Chrome browser, and Google account. For more information, refer to Google’s Chromebook help page.

Chrome browser sync settings

  1. Navigate to and open Chrome, and then select More (the three vertical dots) in the top right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select You and Google, and then select Sync and Google services.
  4. Under the Sync section, select Manage what you sync.
  5. Next, select your sync option:
    • Sync everything: Use the same settings on every Chromebook you are signed into. This option will need to be enabled on each device.
    • Customize sync: Choose specific settings for each Chromebook you are signed into. Then, turn on your preferred settings under the Sync data section.

Chromebook sync settings

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, and then scroll to the Account section. Select Sync and Google services.
  2. Select Manage what you sync.
  3. Next, select what you’d like to sync:
    • Sync everything: Use the same settings on every Chromebook you are signed into. This option will need to be enabled on each device.
    • Customize sync: Choose specific settings for each Chromebook you are signed into. Then, turn on your preferred settings under the Sync data section.
  4. You can also encrypt your synced data with a password by using the Encryption options.

Galaxy phone or tablet sync settings

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, then select Accounts and backup, and then tap Back up data under Google Drive.
  2. Make sure the switch next to Backup by Google One is enabled.
  3. Select each category under Backup details to customize your sync preferences.
  4. Then, tap Back up now.

Delete synced data from your Chromebook

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, and then scroll to the Account section. Select Sync and Google services.
  2. Select Review your synced data.
  3. Select Reset sync at the bottom of the screen.
  4. All data that has been synced will be deleted from your Google account. Your bookmarks, apps, and extensions will remain on your Chromebook, but won't appear on other Chromebooks you are signed into.

Multi-family use

Every member of your family can sign into your Chromebook and use their own profile to browse the web and install apps. You can also enable parental controls for your child’s profile.

Add a new account or profile

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, and then scroll to the Accounts section. Select your Google account.
  2. Select Add Google account.
  3. Follow the prompts to add a new Google account to your Chromebook.
  4. To switch to the new account, select the Power icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, and then select Sign out.
  5. Choose the new account, and then enter your password to proceed.

Add a child account or profile

  1. Select the Power icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, and then select Sign out.
  2. Select Add person.
  3. Select For a child on the Choose your setup screen.
  4. Select Next, and then follow the prompts to add a profile for your child.
Note
The Family Link app can be used on your Chromebook or your Galaxy device.

Use Family Link parental controls

  1. Navigate to and open the Family Link app, and then select your child’s name.
  2. Select Controls, and then select App limits.
  3. Select the app you’d like to allow or block. Select Block, and then select Done.
  4. Next, select Content restrictions, and then select Google Chrome.
  5. Select your desired setting:
    • Allow all sites: Your child will be able to visit all websites except for websites that you block.
    • Try to block explicit sites: This setting hides violent and explicit sites.
    • Only allow approved sites: Your child will only be able to visit websites that you have allowed.
  6. Next, select Advanced settings.
  7. Adjust the options for Permissions for sites, apps, and extensions.

Sign in as a guest

  1. Select the Power icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, and then select Sign out.
  2. Next, select Browse as Guest.

Remove an account or profile

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, and then scroll to the Accounts section. Select your Google account.
  2. Select Menu (the three vertical dots) next to the account’s name.
  3. Select Remove this account.

Manage apps

The Google Play Store can be used to download apps on your Chromebook. After downloading several apps, you can update them, organize them, and change permissions. For more information, please see Google’s Chromebook Help page.

Download an app from the Google Play Store

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, then select Apps, and then select Manage Google Play preferences.
  2. Select More in the pop-up window. 
  3. Agree to the Terms of Service, and then follow the on-screen instructions to open and begin using the Google Play Store app.
  4. From the app, search for or browse the available content.
  5. Select your desired app, and then select Install.
  6. If the app requires a purchase, select your payment method, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the transaction.

Update an app

  1. Select the Launcher icon in the corner of your screen, and then select the up arrow.
  2. Open the Play Store, and then select your Google profile icon.
  3. Select Manage apps and device, and then select Manage.
  4. Tap the app you’d like to update.
  5. Tap Update.

Change app permissions

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, and then scroll to the Google Play Store section. Select Google Play Store.
  2. Select Manage Android preferences.
  3. In the Device section, select Apps.
  4. Select your desired app, and then select Permissions.
  5. You can block the app or allow the app to run on your device by disabling or enabling the permissions.

Locate an app

  1. Select the Launcher icon in the corner of your screen, and then enter the name of the app you’d like to find.
  2. Select the app’s name in the search results.

Organize apps

  1. To add apps to a folder, drag one app onto another app. This will create a new folder. Select the folder to name it.
  2. To move apps around on the screen, select and hold the app, and then drag it.
  3. To reorder apps by name or color, select the Launcher icon in the corner of your screen, and then right-click the app.
  4. Select Sort by, and then select Name or Color.

Uninstall an app

  1. Select the Launcher icon in the corner of your screen, and then right-click the app you'd like to remove.
  2. Select Uninstall or Remove from Chrome.
  3. Select Uninstall again to confirm.

AI features

Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, is available to help you out on your Chromebook. You can use the following productivity options with Gemini:

  • Help me write: Right-click on your desired text to receive writing suggestions, including tone changes and text generation.
  • Help me read: Right-click on your desired text, such as a website or PDF, to generate a summary.
  • Generative AI wallpapers and video call backgrounds: Use AI prompts to create personalized backgrounds for video calls.
  • Magic Editor on Google Photos: Edit your photos by circling or dragging items and using suggestions to alter the lighting or background.
  • Offline files sync: Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can be accessed offline with Google Drive.
  • YouTube offline: YouTube videos can be downloaded to your Chromebook and played when you’re offline.

Connected device experience

You can connect your Chromebook to a variety of devices, such as your Galaxy phone, TV, or Bluetooth devices when you’d like to cast content, share files, or stream from apps.

Cast to your TV

  1. Start by connecting your Chromecast device. Plug one end of a USB cable into your Chromecast and plug the other end into a power supply.
  2. Using any open HDMI port on your TV, plug in your Chromecast.
  3. Connect the power supply to an outlet.
  4. Using your TV’s remote, press the Input or Source button to change the input. Select your Chromecast.
  5. Using your Chromebook, sign into your account.
  6. You can cast the following from your Chromebook to your TV:
    • Cast from Chrome: Open Chrome, then select More (the three vertical dots), and then select Cast. Select Cast to, and then select Cast tab or Cast desktop. Select your Chromecast.
    • Cast from YouTube: Open Chrome, then navigate to and open YouTube, and then select your desired media. Select the time at the bottom of the screen, and then select Cast on the Media Player. Select your Chromecast.
    • Cast from your desktop: Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled, and then select the time at the bottom of the screen. Select Cast devices available, then select your Chromecast, and then choose what you’d like to cast. Select Share.
    • Cast videos from Google Drive: Select the Launcher icon in the corner of the screen, then select Files, and then select My Drive. Select your desired video file, and then select Cast in the pop-up window. Select your Chromecast.

Automatically save and sync notes with Samsung Notes

 

Your notes will be automatically saved in Samsung Notes on your Galaxy phone, but they can also be synced with your Samsung account.

  1. Using your phone, open the Samsung Notes app, then tap Menu (the three horizontal lines), and then tap the Settings icon.
  2. Tap Sync with Samsung Cloud, and then allow the permissions.
  3. Tap Sync with Samsung Cloud again, and then tap switch at the top of the page to turn the feature on or off. 
  4. You can also tap Sync using to choose whether syncing occurs through Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  5. If you want to save your note as a different type of file, you have plenty of choices. You can save it as a PDF, Microsoft Word file, a PowerPoint file, an image file, or a text file. Navigate to and open the note that you want to back up, and then tap More options (the three vertical dots).
  6. Next, tap Save as file, and then select your desired file format.

Use Phone Hub to stream apps

 

Phone Hub lets you use your Galaxy phone’s features on your Chromebook.

  1. Select the Phone icon in the bottom right corner of your Chromebook’s screen, and then select Get Started.
  2. Select Accept & Continue. Under the Connected devices section, select Set up next to “Android phone.”
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then select Done.
  4. Next, navigate to and open Settings, then select Connected devices, and then select your phone.
  5. Tap the switch next to Phone Hub to enable it, and then enable the individual features as desired.
  6. After enabling Phone Hub, you can stream apps using the following methods:
    • Through messaging app notifications: The app’s streaming window will open and the app’s icon will appear next to the Phone Hub icon.
    • Through the Recents Apps list in Phone Hub: On your Chromebook, select Recent Apps, and then select your desired app.
    • Through All Apps in the Recent Apps list in Phone Hub: On your Chromebook, select Recent Apps, and then select All Apps. Select your desired app.

Use Fast Pair

 

Fast Pair lets you quickly connect to Bluetooth devices.

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, and then select Bluetooth.
  2. Enable the Scan for new devices option, and then select your desired device when it appears.
  3. Alternatively, select the Bluetooth icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, and then select Connect. If the device has been previously connected to your Chromebook, it will pair automatically.

Use Quick Share

  1. To begin sharing a file from your Chromebook, navigate to and open Settings, and then select Connected devices.
  2. Select Set up next to Quick Share.
  3. Choose a name for your device, and then select Done.
  4. Select Device visibility, and then choose All contacts, Some contacts, or Hidden. Select Confirm.
  5. Next, find a file you’d like to share.
  6. Select Share, and then select Quick Share.
  7. Select the device to share with, and then select Share to confirm.
  8. To share a file to your Chromebook using your Galaxy phone, navigate to a file you’d like to share, and then select the Share icon.
  9. Select Quick Share.
  10. Select your Chromebook and then follow the prompts to share your file.

The following breakdown will help you use the different ports on your Chromebook when connecting devices.

  • MicroSD port: Insert an SD card to store files, photos, and videos.
  • 3.5m HP/MIC jack: Connect headphones, audio equipment, or microphones.
  • HDMI port: Cast your Chromebook’s screen to an external display like a TV or monitor.
  • USB Type-A 3.2 port: Connect peripheral devices like USB storage devices, USB external keyboards and mouse devices, or multi-port adapters.
  • USB Type-C port: Connect peripheral devices like USB storage devices, USB external keyboards and mouse devices, or multi-port adapters. If you have a monitor with a USB Type-C port that supports display output, you can connect the other end directly to the USB-C port on the Chromebook.
