Guide to replacing the water filter in your Samsung refrigerator
To enjoy fresh, great-tasting water from your Samsung refrigerator, you’ll need a clean water filter. Over time, filters become less effective as they trap impurities, which is why we recommend replacing yours every 6 months. Your refrigerator helps keep track: the water filter light will let you know when it’s time for a change. Once you’ve installed a new filter, don’t forget to reset that light so the countdown starts again. This guide will walk you through what you need to know to keep your fridge’s water clean and refreshing.
Note:
- Filter types: Samsung refrigerators use different water filters depending on the model, so the replacement steps may vary. Always check your refrigerator’s model number before purchasing and installing a new filter.
- Genuine filters: For best results, only use Samsung Genuine Filters designed to work with your refrigerator. You can purchase them directly from our website.
- Third-party filters: Avoid using non-Samsung filters, which may not fit properly, could leak, and may even damage your refrigerator.
Not all Samsung refrigerators use the same water filter, so there are two methods you can use to determine which one you need:
- Method #1: Locate your refrigerator’s model number (on the label inside the unit), then use Samsung’s online tool. It will instantly show you the correct water filter to buy.
- Method #2: Check the filter currently installed in your fridge. This takes a bit more effort, but it also helps you get familiar with the replacement process.
Method #1: Use the online compatibility tool
Samsung offers an online tool that quickly identifies the correct water filter for your refrigerator. All you need is your appliance’s model number, usually found on a label inside the unit.
From any web browser, go to the Samsung refrigerator water filter finder, enter your model number, and the tool will instantly display the right filter to buy.
Note: Need help locating your model number? See our comprehensive guide or use the tips provided directly on the compatibility tool page.
Method #2: Check the filter already in your fridge
If you can’t find the model number, or you’d simply like another option, you can identify the correct filter by inspecting the one already installed in your refrigerator.
Important: Turning off the water supply and relieving the water pressure makes it easier to remove or replace the filter. To do this, shut off the water supply, then dispense water from the dispenser until the flow stops.
Depending on your refrigerator model, the filter may be inside the fridge, in the upper right corner, or at the bottom near the crisper drawers. If you’re not sure, check your user manual. Most filters are easy to spot, look for a cap marked with the word LOCK.
Turn the filter knob or cap counterclockwise until it releases, then pull it out. Don’t worry if it feels snug at first: a gentle twist usually does the trick (we’ll cover the detailed replacement steps in the next section).
Look for the model number printed on the cartridge (HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN or HAF-CU1). Also pay attention to the shape of the filter and the cartridge end: this is a quick way to tell filters apart. Once you’ve identified which type you need, you can temporarily reinstall the old filter until you purchase a replacement.

Replacing your water filter is simple and should only take a few minutes. If you’re unsure whether it’s time to replace it, check the indicator light on your refrigerator. After about six months of use, the light will change (on some models it turns on when it was previously off, while on others it turns red). When this happens, it means the filter should be replaced right away.
Replace an HAF-CIN or HAF-QIN water filter
Note: On most Samsung refrigerators, this is done by holding the Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water button for 3 seconds until the indicator turns off.
Replace an HAFCU1 water filter
Note: On most Samsung refrigerators, this can be done by holding the Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water button for 3 seconds until the indicator turns off.
The water filter light on your refrigerator works on a timer and turns on after about 6 months. On some models, the light is always lit and will change to red after 6 months.
Keep in mind this timer is only a guideline. Depending on the quality of your local water and how often you use the dispenser, you may need to replace the filter sooner or later. To double-check, try dispensing water once with the filter installed and again with it removed. If the water flow is noticeably slower with the filter installed, it’s time to replace it, even if the light has not turned on.
You can use the following steps to reset the water filter light:
Note: Some models require pressing two buttons at the same time to reset the light. If you don’t see a reset button, check your user manual. Touch-screen models use on-screen menus instead (see the next sections).
Note: On most Samsung refrigerators, this can be done by holding the Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water button for three seconds until the indicator turns off.
The water filter light and timer on Family Hub refrigerators can be reset directly from the touchscreen with these steps:
These are older Samsung refrigerator models that are no longer sold, but if you still own one, you can reset the filter light using the steps below:
Even with a new Samsung Genuine Filter, you might encounter issues after replacement. Here are some common problems and solutions:
- Water tastes or smells odd: Run more water through the dispenser (about 2–3 more gallons). This helps flush out carbon particles and air from the new filter.
- Water flow is slow: Check that the filter is installed correctly and fully locked in place. If the flow is still slow, dispense a few more liters to clear air from the line.
- Filter won’t lock into place: Make sure the protective cap has been removed from the new filter and that you’re aligning it properly with the housing.
- Filter light won’t reset: Different models use different reset methods. Try holding the Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water button for 3 seconds. If that doesn’t work, check your user manual.
- Water leaking around the filter: Remove the filter and reinstall it, making sure it’s turned fully clockwise into the locked position. If the leak continues, the O-ring may be damaged. Replace the filter with a new Samsung Genuine Filter.
