What is Extra brightness mode on Galaxy S22 & how to turn it on

Person using S22 in dark lighting

Extra brightness mode on the S22 series provides 1.6 times more brightness when manually adjusting brightness, meaning you can use your device in a range of low light circumstances. Adaptive brightness is still the better option for the majority of situations especially outdoors in direct sunlight or very bright lights. Extra brightness is hidden in the Display menu and will appear when you turn Adaptive brightness off. Find out how to turn it on, as well as find answers to frequently asked questions.

To turn Extra brightness mode on:

1 Go to Settings, then tap Display
Display selected in settings
2 Tap the toggle next to Adaptive brightness to turn it off

No. Extra brightness mode is only available when turning Adaptive brightness off. Adaptive brightness is designed to optimise brightness depending on the user’s conditions and is adjustable by sliding up and down on the brightness bar. If you need more brightness than the maximum level on this bar, it is recommended to turn Extra brightness mode on.

Extra brightness allows for a higher level of brightness than Adaptive brightness when manually adjusting the brightness bar on your device. In direct sunlight or extreme levels of light Adaptive brightness uses HBM (High Brightness Mode) to take your brightness above what is possible when manually adjusting the brightness. Adaptive brightness is recommended for most situations especially when your outside in the sun and using your device normally.

There is a small risk that Extra brightness mode may leave an afterimage/burn in like stain on your device’s display. To reduce the risk of this, it is recommended to only use Extra brightness mode when needed and to turn it off when not using it. Please visit Samsung Support if you are concerned about an afterimage on your device’s display.

It is recommended that Extra brightness mode is only used in conditions with low light. If your eyes start to feel tired while using it is recommended you turn Extra brightness mode off.

Extra brightness mode will use more of your device’s battery than Adaptive brightness. This is because it is a manual setting and no longer adapting the brightness to save battery where possible. For this reason, it is recommended to only use Extra brightness mode when needed.
