When your Samsung Washing Machine is displaying a 5E error code, it means that your washer is having draining issues.

If you have a front load washer and would like to manually emergency drain it, please visit our page about 'Emergency Draining a Samsung Front Loader.'

Please be advised that the following guide provides general troubleshooting steps and instructions for your specific model may vary. Consult your User Manual for model-specific information.

Resolving the Code

The steps below are for both top load and front load models, unless otherwise stated in the specific step itself.

IMPORTANT: Ensure that the power is turned off and the plug has been removed from the power point before commencing any work.

1 Turn off the washer and check that it is level.

You can use a level tool to check if your washer is levelled properly, and adjust it if needed. Follow our guide How do I level my washing machine to learn how to do so.

2 Inspect the drain hose.

Samsung recommends a standpipe 60-90cm or 90-100cm high. Make sure the drain hose/drain system has no clogs or kinks. Check that the drain hose is not frozen or clogged, and that it is positioned correctly depending on the connection type*.

*For more information, the full installation instructions are available in your User Manual

Over the Edge of a Wash Basin

The drain hose must be placed between 60 cm and 90 cm (*) above from the floor.

To keep the spout of the drain hose bent, use the supplied plastic hose guide (A).

Secure the guide to the wall using a hook to ensure stable drainage.

In a Drain Pipe

The drain pipe should be between 60cm and 90cm high (*). It is advisable to use a 65cm high vertical pipe.

To ensure the drain hose stays in position, use the plastic hose guide provided (see image above).

To prevent the siphoning of water flow during drainage, make sure to insert the drain hose 15cm into the drain pipe.

To prevent the drain hose from moving around, secure the hose guide to the wall.

Drain standpipe requirements:

  1. Minimum diameter of 5cm

  2. Minimum carry-away capacity of 60L per minute

Note: If you continue to encounter a drain problem, please call for service.

3 Clean the pump filter (for front load only*).

Clean the pump filter periodically and drain it to improve cleaning performance and help prevent odours. A clogged pump filter reduces the effectiveness of the draining system.

*Only select top load models will have a pump filter, with no draining hose provisions. You will need to request service if you would like to have the filter checked and cleaned. You can also check if your machine has a Mesh Filter, and try cleaning that.

4 Turn the washer back on and start a cycle.

The washer should drain at the beginning of the test cycle, and resolve the code.
