Customise the Ringtone on a Samsung Phone

Last modified : May 21. 2019

Change up the Ringtone on a Samsung device by selecting a pre-loaded ringtone or use a custom music file. You can even select an individual ringtone for a specific contact; so when your phone plays a special ringtone you'll know who's calling.

Please Note: If you would like to extend the number of rings before a call is sent to your voicemail, you will need to get in touch with your network provider as they will be able to increase the ringer length before your call is diverted to your voicemail.

Choose a New Ringtone:

1 Open the Settings app
2 Select Sounds & Vibration
3 Open the Ringtone option
4 Choose from the preloaded ringtones
5 Tap Done to finish and save your selection

Use a Music File as a Ringtone:

You can use files that are saved to your device as MP3, WAV, AAC and MP4 as a custom Ringtone. To use a music file as a ringtone, see the steps below:

1 Open the Settings app
2 Select Sounds & Vibration
3 Open the Ringtone option
4 Select Add or +

If prompted, select Sound Picker to find music files on your device.

5 Choose a Music File to use as a Ringtone, and tap Done to finish.

Customise the Ringtone of a Single Contact:

Whether it's your boss, your BFF, or a favourite family member; you can customise the ringtone that plays when that special someone calls your phone. There's no limit to how many different contacts you can select a custom ringtone for. See the steps on how to choose a separate ringtone for just one person in your contacts:

1 Open the Contacts app
2 Find and view the details for the contact you want to customise
3 Select Edit . The edit option might be a pencil icon at the top of the screen.

Select View More  at the bottom of the page on devices running Android OS 7 and higher

4 Tap the Ringtone option
5 Select from the available pre-loaded ringtones, or tap Add to choose a music file on your device

Custom Message Notifications:

On devices running Android OS 7 and higher, you can set individual Notification sounds for the Samsung Messages app. For devices running Android OS 7, you can follow the steps for Customising the Ringtone for a Single Contact, and select Notifications at Step 4 instead. For devices running Android OS 8 or 9, see the steps below:

1 Open the Samsung Messages app
2 Open the conversation you want to customise
3 Tap the 3 dot menu button at the top right
4 Select the Notifications or Custom Notification option

Tap the Cogwheel next to Custom if you have this option

5 Select Sound and choose from the pre-loaded Notification sounds

Use the Home or Back key to exit and finish
