What does 8K mean?

An 8K TV is a TV that has a screen with 7,680 horizontal and 4,320 vertical pixels for a total of approximately 33 million pixels. The "K" in 8K stands for Kilo (1000), meaning a TV that has achieved a horizonal resolution of about 8,000 pixels.

8K TV is the highest resolution TV that has been released recently among UHD (ultra high definition) TVs. With four times more pixels than a 4K TV—another type of UHD resolution—8K TVs show a sharper and more detailed picture quality. This is because in 8K TVs pixels are so small they cannot be distinguished even from close up, making highly detailed images a reality.

See the difference in image quality

So, how good are 8K TVs compared to other TVs? Let's compare them to Full HD TVs and 4K UHD TVs to find out.

The resolution in 8K TVs is 4 times higher than that of 4K UHD TVs, and 16 times higher than Full HD TVs. Higher resolution means that there are more pixels that make up the screen. In other words, on the same size TVs, pixels are more densely packed within the same area which allows for a much more sophisticated and realistic image representation. This provides an overwhelming sense of immersion when you watch TV.

The term used to describe the number of pixels in a given area is called PPI (Pixels Per Inch), and naturally a higher PPI number means higher pixel density. Typically, on a 75" 8K TV the PPI is 117 while on a 4K TV and FHD TV it's 59 PPI and 29 PPI respectively.

Explore the expanding 8K content universe

As the number of 8K content is continuously increasing in the market, now is the time to invest in 8K products. Whether you’re a movie buff, a gamer, NFT collector or just want the best possible viewing experience, an 8K TV is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the world of high-resolution content.

Turn what you love into 8K with AI Upscaling

All 8K TVs have Upscaling technology, however every TV maker implements their own specific technology to produce 8K-like quality visuals.

In 2019, Samsung 8K TV is introduced with its own specialised 8K AI Upscaling technology. The AI Upscaling technology uses a method that collects and learns a wide variety of content characteristics by type and then stores them in a database. It later uses that database to process similar image types again, making for a much more sophisticated Upscaling process. With Upscaling being so important and various choices available, take the time to compare and make a well-informed decision.

8K TVs, the latest TV technology

8K TVs are the comprehensive outcome of state-of-the-art display panel technology, top quality picture technology and the best semiconductor technology. As a result, Samsung as well as other major TV makers are now applying 8K resolution to their top TV models. If you want to buy the best TV currently available, an 8K TV is the way to go.

  • What is 8K resolution?

A 8K resolution TV is the highest resolution offering amongst Samsung TVs, has 4 times more pixels than a 4K TV and 16 times higher resolution than Full HD TVs. 8K TVs provide detailed, sharp imagery that can transform your viewing experience.
  • Higher TV resolution means more pixels are packed into the makeup of the screen1. Therefore, 8K resolution has 16 times the pixels of a traditional Full HD TV and can provide a more immersive, detailed image quality and viewing experience than 4K resolution.2 If you’re on the search for realistic, sophisticated picture quality, check out Samsung’s 4K and 8K TV ranges and transform your entertainment needs.
  • As far as 4K vs 8K goes, it really comes down to preference and budget. As mentioned, the more pixels on a screen, the higher the resolution, and hence, the more detailed the picture quality. While both 4K and 8K resolution TVs provide excellent image representation, an 8K smart TV has 4 times the number of pixels of a 4K TV, and would be a good fit for a household looking for enhanced definition on screen.3
  • For general cleaning of your 8K TV screen, we strongly recommend use of gentle products to avoid damaging the TV in the process. We would recommend a gentle microfibre cloth or flannel sprayed with water to wipe down any marks or dust. Avoid putting any harsh cleaning fluids or chemicals directly on your TV screen.4 For more information on this, check out our guide on how to clean a 8K TV screen.
