What is Samsung Neo QLED Technology?

If you're wondering what Neo QLED means and what 'Neo' means on a Samsung TV, we're here break it down for you.

In short, Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs utilize Mini LED technology to make your TV screen brighter, your colors more accurate and your viewing experience more realistic. Whether you're looking to upgrade your favorite content to 4K or 8K or take advantage of all that Neo QLED gaming has to offer, Samsung Neo QLED TVs have some great benefits.

For a more in-depth explanation of the differences between Samsung Neo QLED and QLED, the difference between Neo QLED and OLED, and whether a Neo QLED TV is worth it for you, read on below.

What does Neo QLED mean?

Samsung Neo QLED technology is an advancement of our QLED technology, which stands for Quantum Dot LED. And what are Quantum Dots? Put it simply, they are very small particles, around a few nanometres in size. When these Quantum Dots are illuminated by UV light from behind the screen, they gain energy and produce different colors of light. The light derived from Quantum Dots is more efficient than a conventional LCD*, allowing QLED displays to deliver a brighter picture, more accurate color and greater energy efficiency.

With Samsung Neo QLEDs, the thousands of tiny LED light bulbs in the backlight panel in your QLED TV are now replaced by smaller and finer LEDs, delivering brighter whites, deeper blacks and improved color range as compared to conventional Samsung LEDs.

Want to top off your viewing experience with great sound? Consider adding a Samsung Q Series soundbar to your setup.† Q Series soundbars synchronize with your Samsung TV, creating immersive soundscape that pairs the TV's built-in speakers with the soundbar's front, side and up-firing speakers, for an incredibly realistic acoustic experience that matches the visuals.

What is the difference between Samsung Neo QLED and QLED?

In 2021, we launched our revolutionary Samsung Neo QLED TV. But what is a Neo QLED TV? Essentially, Neo QLED stands for neo (or new) quantum light-emitting diode, meaning that the thousands of tiny LED lights in the backlight panel in your QLED TV are now replaced by much smaller LEDs, each around the size of a grain of sand.

More LEDs that are smaller in size translate to more exacting light control on your display. This virtually eliminates "blooming" on your screen—where brighter areas on your screen bleed into darker into areas. With Samsung Mini LEDs, you'll enjoy a level of precise contrast and pinpoint lighting that only Samsung Neo QLEDs can provide. With Samsung Neo QLEDs, you'll also get an expanded range of brightness, up to a billion shades of color and enjoy Samsung's best contrast and HDR yet.

Neo QLED vs. OLED: What’s the difference?

Samsung offers QLED, Neo QLED and OLED technologies to meet your preference and lifestyle. These premium TVs have Quantum Dot technology for jaw-dropping color and a highly rated picture—the difference comes down to where and how the TV is used.

Samsung Neo QLED and QLED TVs are ideal for brighter rooms, bringing content to life in everyday lighting. Samsung OLED TVs excel in darker rooms, offering a deeply immersive, cinematic experience.

All three of our premium TV lines include a Quantum Dot display and proprietary technology our competitors simply don’t have. It’s up to you to decide which Samsung TV is right for you.
