Turn Off Wi-Fi Direct

If you have shared documents or other files to another device using Wi-Fi direct, you'll notice a persistent icon in the status bar. Turning off Wi-Fi direct is as simple as accessing the Wi-Fi settings, and disconnecting the devices. Follow the steps below to get started.

1 Open the Settings on either device
2 Open the Wi-Fi Settings. This may be under the Connections option depending on the Operating System of your device.
3 Select the Wi-Fi Direct option. This will either be a standalone button in the top right corner or will be available under the 3 dot menu button.
4 Tap the device you wish to disconnect. On older Operating Systems you may need to select End Connection at the bottom of the screen, and then select Ok to disconnect the two devices.

Visibility Options:

There are a couple of settings that you can use to further reduce a mobile device from both searching for available devices and to keep the phone or tablet from being visible to other devices. 

 

The Phone Visibility option lets other devices see and find your phone. It doesn't mean that any devices can see the information on your device, just that it's available for pairing. Even once connected, any other device connected by Wi-Fi direct will only be able to receive files, not see everything.

 

The Nearby Device Scanning option uses low-energy Bluetooth signals to discover other devices around you that you might want to connect to, and having this option on may prompt you to connect up speakers or TVs to share your content more easily. 

Turn off Phone Visibility:

  • Settings > Connections > Phone Visibility > Toggle Off

Turn off Nearby Device Scanning:

  • Settings > Connections > More Connection Settings > Nearby Device Scanning > Toggle Off
