Check for Software updates on Samsung Phones

Last modified : Apr 30. 2020

Check for the latest software update for your Samsung phone or tablet to increase the functionality and security of your device. Operating system updates are device dependant, so not every Samsung phone will run the latest Android version.

Updates are made available seperately for devices purchased through a telecommunication partner like Telstra, Optus or Vodafone.

There are two different ways to update the Software of your Mobile device, either Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA), or through a program on a computer - with Kies (for phones like the Note2 or Galaxy S4 and older) or Samsung Smart Switch (for all devices newer than the Note 3 or Galaxy S5).

Please Note: This guide is designed for Australian variant Galaxy devices, if you have an international device and require further support click here to get in touch with your Samsung subsidiary. It is highly recommended to have a fully charged battery and to connect to a stable Wi-Fi network before downloading a new software update. Downloading via mobile networks may result in additional charges. Please ensure that your Mobile device has enough storage space before performing a Software Update.

Device checking for an update

If your device is already running the latest available software, you'll be presented with a screen that will tell you the full version number of the current Operating System.

If there is an available update:

1 Select the Download option

It is important to check you have sufficient internal memory available to download the new update. You'll be prompted if there is not enough storage space on your device to download the update. It's best to Back up your device so you can delete apps, videos or photos to free up some storage space to continue. As well as remove any encryptions on your SD Card, check out our page Removing Encryptions on my microSD card? for step-by-step instructions.

2 Select from the Install options

Updating the operating system of your device will automatically turn your phone off, and you won't be able to use it for at least 5 minutes. The update will automatically turn the phone back on when it's finished - so it's best to update the device when you don't need to use it.

  • Later: Postpone the update until you're ready. Follow the same steps outlined above to install the update when you have time.
  • Install Overnight: The device will automatically update in the early hours of the morning when you're least likely to be using it.
  • Install Now: Install the update immediately.
