How do I modify picture size on my Smart TV?

Last modified : Mar 26. 2018

Most TV programmes and videos are displayed in wide screen. However, not all are compatible, hence do not fill the whole screen. You can change the picture size for such programmes and videos manually. However, the available aspect ratio options may differ, depending on the video source. Refer to the Picture Size and Input Signal section of your user manual for more information.

Follow the instructions below to select aspect ratio of your choice:

Please note:

●      If the TV is attached  to a set-top-box, you may be able to eliminate the bars by changing the output resolution of the set-top-box.

●      In many cases, the cable or over-the-air TV network station is broadcasting the program or the movie you are watching in a format that includes the bars. If this is the case, you cannot eliminate them.

●      Samsung TVs display black bars only. If you see gray bars, they are being transmitted by the source of the picture, for example, a set-top-box. If you want to remove the gray bars, you must change the picture size or aspect ratio on the source.

1 Press the Home button on your remote control to bring up the menu window. Select Picture > Picture Size.

There are 8 different possible options (depending on the signal and the model of your TV) for setting a fixed aspect ratio:

16:9: Samsung televisions automatically adjust the source picture size to the 16:9 aspect ratio.

4:3: Samsung televisions automatically adjust the source picture size to the 4:3 aspect ratio black bars to the left and right will be visible (commonly referred to as a pillar box image).

Smart View 1: Samsung televisions reduce a 16:9 picture by 50%. This mode is only available for LED TVs and in HDMI mode.

Smart View 2: Samsung televisions reduce a 16:9 picture by 25%. This mode is only available for LED TVs and in HDMI or DTV mode.

Screen fit: Samsung televisions display the full image from the source without any cutoff changes.

Wide Zoom: Samsung televisions magnify the picture without changing the aspect ratio. A magnified picture can be moved up and down.

Auto Wide: Samsung televisions automatically follow the broadcast picture size to display original producer desired aspect ratio.

Zoom: Magnifies the 16:9 wide pictures vertically to fit the screen. This is used to display images produced in cinema scope (where normally black bars are displayed at the top and bottom of the screen, normally referred to as a “letter box” image). A magnified picture can be moved up and down.

Please note: Some 4:3 images are displayed in 16:9 format with black bars added to the left and right of the screen.
