Timeshift on a Samsung TV

Last modified : Apr 16. 2019

Timeshift is a function of some Samsung Smart TVs that will allow you to Pause and Rewind Live TV channels. If your TV is capable of utilising the Timeshift function, you’ll need to attach a USB Hard Drive or a high speed USB Flash Drive before you’ll be able to activate Timeshift.

With Timeshift, you can pause the TV program for a maximum of 90 minutes and continue watching later. Timeshift is particularly useful if you do not want to miss a single second of a game or TV show. Timeshift is not designed to permanently store recordings from digital channels.

To watch one channel and record another channel at the same time, you’ll need a separate external tuner with a hard disc recorder attached to your TV. PVRs are available for purchase from most major retailers.

Please Note: While Timeshift is in use, the Broadcasting menu will be greyed out or disabled.

TV Requirements for TimeshiftClick to Expand
  • Your Samsung Smart TV must support the Timeshift function (check the full specifications for your TV online)
  • The TV signal must be received directly from the tuner built into the Samsung TV
  • A compatible USB hard drive attached to the TV
Hard Drive and Flash Drive CompatibilityClick to Expand

High-speed USB sticks:

  • Read speed: at least 20 Mbit/s
  • Write speed: at least 34 Mbps
  • Memory size: at least 8GB available storage

External hard drives:

  • Both SSD and HDD hard disks can be used
  • 2.5-inch hard drives without their own power supply (so long as the drive doesn’t use up more than 400 mA current).
  • 3.5 inch hard drives with a separate power supply.
  • Rotation speed of at least 5,400/min
  • USB 3.0 hard drives must be backwards compatible

External hard drives with more than 500GB of memory may not be recognised. If your hard drive has more than 500GB total storage and isn’t detected, we recommend partitioning the drive to a maximum of 500GB NTFS.

Preparing a HDD for TimeshiftClick to Expand

Connect the hard disk to your TV. If you are using a HDD make sure to insert into the USB port on the TV that is labelled as HDD. If you are using a USB flash drive you can insert the drive into any USB port on the TV.

If this is the first time using Timeshift,  the TV will run a performance test on the attached drive. It will either pass or fail the performance test. If it fails the performance test, it means your drive is not supported or not compatible. If the drive passes the performance test, the drive will be formatted to the TV. This means the drive will be wiped of existing data and the content will only be accessible when attached to this tv.

Please Note:  If the TV gets serviced; especially if the Mainboard (PCB) gets replaced, you will not be able to access the recordings on your USB/HDD drive
as the DRM locks to the physical hardware of the TV. The same issue applies if your TV gets replaced or if you buy a new TV; you will not be able to use this drive on the new TV without formatting and wiping all data once more.
