The Serif Design Story

How the Bouroullec Brothers mastered form and function.

Leave it to French furniture designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec to add elegance to otherwise ordinary objects. The Bouroullec Brothers have been drawing major attention from the design industry’s biggest names like Vitra, Hay, Kartell and more for their ability to stylishly reinvent traditional pieces of furniture. We sat down with Erwan to discuss the aesthetic value of their design and how it is reflected in The Serif.

"Instead of trying to imagine the future, we just tried to make it 'now'."

In an exclusive interview with Samsung, the Bouroullecs elaborate on their design philosophy and aesthetic value in designing The Serif, a new Samsung TV that enhances space. They are shown discussing their design ideas at Showroom Vitra France. Borderless boundaries

To refer to the Bouroullecs as mere furniture designers would be an understatement—their work goes above and beyond typical boundaries. The Bouroullecs have a knack for focusing on the functionality within an object. As a result, The Serif TV holds a “beautiful language and subtle presence," assuming its place in the world of modern design.

Effortless ambience

Like the Bouroullecs’ other pieces, The Serif effortlessly blends into its surroundings. They gracefully substituted the black, blank screen of a TV with Ambient Mode, which can have you gazing into endless fields or feeling sentimental over raindrops. Ambient Mode is a “way to slightly mute the TV when it needs to disappear” for a much-needed moment of retreat.

Seamless connections

Due to its symmetrical I-shape, The Serif doubles as a shelf for an added experience. Unlike other TVs that may be isolated within a room, The Serif connects spaces and people organically and seamlessly.

“The Serif ’I’ shape has a very beautiful language that makes it sit naturally anywhere.”

Timeless touch

While trends may come and go, the pieces designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are timeless. Designed to “travel through times,” The Serif is one object that will leave a lasting impression.

Unique inspiration for your space

The Serif might just be the missing piece to your spatial puzzle.
