It all starts with your closet
Ever find yourself buying the same piece over and over? Before falling into that trap, work with what you already have. “Shop in your own closet as much as possible and then buy supplementary items when needed,” says Tan. If you need to buy something to add more character to your wardrobe, “go for something that is a statement maker...something that you know you're going to wear time and time again,” Tan suggests. To help keep your spending in check, “don't throw your money away on something that is a fad. I would go for something that's a little more classic, and therefore, slightly more sustainable.”

A little effort goes a long way
Even if you’re not going out, Tan still recommends putting some effort into getting dressed. He suggests picking your outfit ahead of time so you can make sure it’s crisp and clean. Tan’s trick for making even a t-shirt look chic? Samsung AirDresser. “The majority of people don't want to iron, but they do want to look fresh,” says Tan. “This product is for those of you out there who just don't want to give any thought to making that one little bit more effort. If you’ve ever wished sweatpants qualified as “festive attire,” you’re in luck. When dressing for a virtual holiday party, take Tan’s advice and “wear something super comfortable, even if it's just your sweats, and then put your money or your effort into what you're wearing up top.” And don’t forget to take your background into consideration — it’s all part of your on-camera look, after all. “Go for something that's a little more striking, but not overly distracting with your backdrop,” says Tan. “Just so you really show your personality without it being too hectic when people are looking at you on screen.”

Authenticity is always in style
Whether you’re out in the real world or spending time at home, dress for who you really, truly are. “Forget all the noise. Forget what seems to be the cool thing,” says Tan. “Focus on the things that make you ‘you’ and that will, in turn, make you happy.” He says this advice also applies when you’re posting on social media, where you may feel pressure to be a more perfect version of yourself. “If you are feeling afraid to be your authentic self online, really start to think, is the person that I am something to be ashamed of? I'm almost positive the answer is no,” says Tan. “Even if there are parts of your personality, or who you are, that are different from others, that's not a bad thing. Variety is the spice of life.”
