What size refrigerator
do I need?

Know what you should look for when sizing up
a new fridge for your kitchen.

What are the top considerations for refrigerator size?

When choosing a refrigerator size, some common things to consider are your kitchen space, storage capacity, type, door clearance and depth.

Types

What are the standard refrigerator sizes and types?

Common refrigerator dimensions range from 65-70" tall, 30-36" wide and 30-36" deep. Samsung offers a variety of refrigerator sizes for your space. Choose a fridge that suits your lifestyle and preferences, with options like French Door, Flex™ or Side-by-Side.

Kitchen space

How much kitchen space do I need for a new fridge?

First, consider the space in your kitchen where you plan to place your refrigerator. Measuring your available space will usually help determine the size and type of fridge you can get. Just remember to allow for some clearance around the fridge — unless you’re choosing a zero clearance fit model, which is designed to open fully even in tight spaces.§

Capacity

What refrigerator capacity do I need?

Consider what fridge capacity works best for your lifestyle. How much food does your family consume each week? Is it mostly frozen goods or fresh produce? Assessing your average consumption as well as the types of groceries you buy is a good way to figure out how much and what kinds of storage space you'll need for your family.

Depth

What refrigerator depth do I need?

Measure the depth of your counters and kitchen space to make sure your refrigerator will fit against the wall and not protrude too much into the room. For a sleek, built-in look, consider a counter-depth refrigerator that sits flush with the front of your cabinets. Check out our Buying Guide to compare counter-depth vs. standard-depth refrigerators.

Door clearance

How do I measure a fridge?

Not sure how much space is needed around a new refrigerator? Always check if a fridge is going to fit by carefully measuring the dimensions of the fridge as well as your kitchen space.

1. Width, Depth, Height

For exterior dimensions, it’s important to factor in components such as handles, doors and compartments when fully opened, any bulkiness in the back, etc. If you’re positioning your refrigerator next to a wall, leave 2-4" on the hinge side of the door. If you’re fitting beneath a low ceiling, make sure to measure for the height as well.

2. Door clearance

If you have a kitchen island, make sure that it doesn't obstruct your refrigerator at any point. Measure the dimensions of your fridge in advance with all doors and compartments fully opened and compare it to the actual space to prevent obstructions.

3. Ventilation space

When installing your refrigerator, it’s critical to factor in for ventilation space to make sure your fridge doesn’t overheat. We recommend that you give 2-4" of clearance on all sides, but make sure to allow at least 3/8-1" of clearance if space is really tight.

4. Measure the delivery path

Don’t forget about the delivery path. Some customers have reported having to return their refrigerators because they didn’t fit inside their front door, elevator, stairs or hallways. To prevent unwanted returns, map out and measure a route in advance that the fridge has no problem passing through.

Our zero clearance fit refrigerators are designed so the fridge doors open even when placed next to a wall or cabinet, making it ideal for tight kitchen layouts. Zero clearance fit refrigerators provide a built-in look with specially designed hinges allow the fridge doors to open in compact spaces without needing extra clearance.§ This feature helps you maximize every inch of your kitchen while still providing easy access to shelves and drawers.

The right-sized fridge for you depends on your household needs and available kitchen space. Capacity-wise, it's a good rule of thumb to factor in 4-6 cu. ft. of fridge space per person. Choose a refrigerator size that fits your space, with at least 2-4" clearance for ventilation and enough room to open and close the doors comfortably.

Simply measure the exterior height, width and depth to determine the size of your refrigerator. For capacity, remove shelves or drawers to accurately measure the refrigerator's interior height, width and depth. Multiply all three numbers together to calculate your fridge capacity in cubic feet.

Refrigerators come in a wide variety of sizes, with dimensions ranging from 62-72” tall, 24-40” wide and 29-36” deep. Samsung Refrigerators range from 66-73” tall, 23-36” wide and 26-37” deep.

A standard, full-sized French Door refrigerator typically measures 70” tall, 36" wide and 36" deep. Dimensions vary by model and will depend on whether a model is standard-depth or counter-depth. Samsung offers a variety of refrigerator sizes to suit your space.

Both standard Samsung Side-by-Side Refrigerators and French Door Refrigerators are 36” wide. Samsung does offer narrow width refrigerator options for homes with limited space.

Before you choose your refrigerator, map out a path from your entryway to your kitchen and measure the width of each hall, corner and doorway along your path to make sure there's enough clearance. This is especially important if you have a large refrigerator. If you plan to unbox your fridge in your kitchen, make sure to check the measurements of the shipping box as well. Our Will-It-Fit Guides ensure you'll find the right fit before you buy.

Samsung offers both standard 36” wide refrigerators and narrow width refrigerators. For tight kitchens or apartments, look for compact models with widths less than 36”. Samsung recommends measuring your kitchen space to ensure a perfect fit before buying.

In general, bigger refrigerators typically require more electricity to run. Samsung ENERGY STAR® Certified Refrigerators come in many sizes — including Mega Capacity models — that are energy-efficient without sacrificing storage space.

If you have very limited space or need extra storage, a mini fridge can be a great option. They most often range in size from 30-35" H x 18-24" W x 19-26" D. Samsung’s most compact fridge is 24” wide and 70” tall.

Choose a refrigerator size based on the number of people in your household, your kitchen space and storage needs. Other considerations include budget, door style and energy efficiency. Samsung offers ENERGY STAR® Certified fridges in a variety of sizes and styles.

Family Size   Fridge Capacity
1-2 people   10-14 cu. ft.

5+ people     21+ cu. ft.

Not counting the handles, Samsung Counter-Depth Refrigerators measure 28-32” deep, available in 3-Door French Door, 4-Door French Door, 4-Door Flex™ and Mega Capacity options.
