How to self-repair your phone screen

Tips for Self-Repair with Samsung Genuine Parts - Galaxy S21 Series: Screen

 

Did you know that Samsung offers a Self-Repair programme?

*The following video demonstrates the self-repair procedures for Galaxy S21 Ultra. The key steps and basic processes are applicable for the Galaxy S21 series. The location of the port and connectors vary by device.

*While more devices might be added later on, the models covered in Samsung Self-Repair programme are currently limited to the Galaxy S20, S21, S22, Galaxy Book Pro 15” and Galaxy Book Pro 360 15” model.

*Damage to the product caused by an improper attempt to repair the product by any person other than a Samsung-certified service provider may not be covered by the warranty.

*Pause the video while completing each step, then resume when ready to continue.

From now on, take device repair into your own hands.

By handling simple repairs yourself, save time and minimise e-waste.

1 Getting ready

First, have all the genuine parts & tools needed for the procedure ready.

*Use only demagnetised tools that are specifically designed for small electronic repairs, as most electronic parts are sensitive to electromagnetic forces.

*For any model-specific instructions, please refer to the appropriate repair guide provided with program.

  • Back glass adhesive tape
  • Front camera adhesive tape
  • Internal metal plate
  • 3rd microphone hole tape

*Always use Samsung-authorised genuine parts. Third-party replacement parts may not function properly.

Repair tools

  • Heating bag
  • Suction cup
  • Opening picks
  • Screw driver PH0
  • Opening tool

 

*You could use existing demagnetised tools that you own to perform repairs.

When repairing devices, you absolutely must wear equipment for your safety

 

Safety equipment

  • Mask
  • Safety glasses
  • ESD-safe gloves

 

*ESD: Electrostatic Discharge.

Perform the repair in a ventilated area and watch out for burns and other injuries.

Have your data backed up safely and ensure the device is turned off.

Before beginning any repair, make sure your battery is fully discharged.

Starting off, make sure to remove the SIM tray using SIM ejector pin.

*Disassembling with the SIM tray still inserted may damage the device.

We’re all set! Shall we start disassembling?

 

2 Disassembly

Back glass

Place Heating bag in the microwave and heat it properly following Heating bag's instruction

*Do not let the temperature of the Heating bag exceed 65˚C. It is recommended that you use a thermometer

to properly measure and limit the temperature.

*Make sure the microwave turntable spins freely so that Heating bag does not get stuck.

*When handling a heated Heating bag, always wear safety gloves and be careful of burns.

Never place a phone or tablet device directly into the microwave to heat it.

To disassemble Back glass, follow 3 steps on all 4 edges of the back of the device.

*Sequence shortened. Actual steps may vary.

    Step. 1 Apply Heating bag on the left edge of Back glass.

    Step. 2 Attach Suction cup to the heated edge.

*Recommended safety equipment: safety glasses, ESD-safe gloves, mask.

    Step. 3 Use Opening pick to create a gap between Back glass and Screen module.

*In order not to damage the product when removing Back glass, insert only the tip of Opening pick and never insert it all the way in.

*When dealing with broken glass, fully equip yourself with protective gear including safety glasses, ESD-safe gloves, and mask to prevent injuries.

Repeat the 3 steps for the top, right, and bottom edges respectively.

Gently lift to remove Back glass using Suction cup.

Remove Internal metal plate & Back glass adhesive tape using ESD-safe tweezers.

*When assembling, use a new adhesive and metal plate.

Once the Back glass adhesive tape is removed, the Camera deco part gets separated by itself.

*In the case of the Samsung Galaxy S21, Camera deco will not come off even after the adhesive is softened and removed.

Remove two 3rd microphone hole tapes from Camera deco and the device using ESD-safe tweezers.

Wireless charging module

Check the points where the connectors are connected.

NFC connector / UWB connector

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Disconnect each of them using Opening tool.

Check the 9 points where the Screws are located.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Remove all Screws using a Screw driver PH0.

*Use only high-quality screwdrivers when servicing products. Low-quality screwdrivers can easily damage the heads of screws.

*When assembling, use new screws.

and remove Wireless charging module using Round tip metal tweezers.

Charging port

Now check the points where the connectors are connected.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Disconnect connectors from the Main board using Opening tool.

Separate the Antenna cable.

Check the 3 points where the Screws are located.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Remove all Screws using Screw driver PH0.

*Use only high-quality screwdrivers when servicing products. Low-quality screwdrivers can easily damage the heads of screws.

*When assembling, use new screws.

and lift Charging port away from assembly using tweezers.

Top piece

Check the points where the connectors are connected.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Disconnect connectors from the Main board using Opening tool.

Check the 4 points where the Screws are located.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Remove all Screws using a Screw driver PH0.

Be careful not to put your fingertips or foreign objects on the rear camera.

Remove Top piece of rear assembly using Round tip metal tweezers.

Main board

Check the points where the Screw and connector are connected

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Disconnect Front camera connector from Main board and remove a Screw

Lift Main board away from the front assembly

*The Main board can only be replaced at a Samsung authorised repair store. Please contact Samsung for additional support.

Front camera

Check where the Front camera module is located.

Apply Heating bag on the back of Front camera module after heating it correctly.

*Follow the instructions for the Heating bag in order to avoid damaging the device through excessive heat.

*Do not place the device directly into a microwave.

Remove resin bonding between the Front camera and the Screen module using a SIM ejector pin.

Lift up and remove the Front camera.

You’re now set to replace the Screen!

4 Reassembly

Front camera

Remove sponge using Round tip metal tweezers.

Sponge.

Front camera adhesive tape.

Attach new Front camera adhesive tape using Round tip metal tweezers.

Do not let the adhesive come into contact with dust or contaminants.

Insert Front camera.

and ensure the Front camera is aligned correctly against the camera hole on the screen.

*Make sure the Front camera hole is free of contaminants including adhesive tape residues before reassembling.

 

Main board

Check the Main board’s location.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Assemble the Main board.

*Be careful not to touch the lens during this process.

Connect the Front camera cable.

Check the screw’s location and fasten it.

Top piece

Check the 4 points where the Screws are located.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Attach the Top piece and fasten the Screws.

Check the points where the cables are connected.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Connect the connectors.

 

Charging port

Assemble the Charging port.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Check the points where the cables are connected.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Connect the Main cable.

Connect the Antenna cable.

Now check the points where the connectors are connected.

Connect all connectors.

Press down on it in its position until you hear a locking sound.

 

Wireless charging module

Put the Wireless charging module back to its original position.

Press down the upper part of Wireless charging module.

Check the 9 points where the Screws are located.

*The locations of ports and connectors vary by device.

Fasten screws.

Connect the NFC and UWB connectors.

Press down on it in its position until you hear a locking sound.

 

Back glass

Attach the Camera deco so that it fits the form.

Make sure there is no space between Back glass and Camera deco.

Back glass adhesive tape.

Attach new Back glass adhesive tape.

Internal metal plate.

Attach new Internal metal plate.

3rd microphone hole tape.

Attach new 3rd microphone hole tape.

Remove all of the release films.

Gently press down all edges so that Back glass is tightly clasped.

*IPXX performance cannot be guaranteed when it is repaired by user or non-skilled person.

Another way to prolong the life of your devices.
