Overview of the One UI 5 key features

One UI 5 is the latest version of the Samsung Galaxy operating system. It offers new and improved features to provide an enhanced experience with even more customisation options.

Below you can find an overview of the key features on One UI 5.

More colour palette options

With One UI 5, it is now easier to find colours for your device’s colour palette. You can also choose from up to 16 colour themes to match your device’s wallpaper or from pre-set colour themes.

Personalise your lock screen

It is easier to personalise your lock screen on One UI 5: simply tap and hold the lock screen, then unlock your device. You will then be able to choose the wallpaper, clock style, notification settings and more.

Custom call backgrounds

You can now set a different call background for each contact, allowing you to see who is calling at a glance.

Redesigned wallpaper options

Easily find wallpapers for the Home and Lock screens of your device. Colours, graphic wallpapers and Dynamic Lock screens are now all found in the same place.

Help guide in Pro mode

An information icon has been added to Pro mode to give you tips about using the different lenses, options and controls in this feature.

Histogram in Pro mode         

You can use the histogram to adjust the brightness in your shots so that you get the perfect exposure.

Improved zoom with one hand

The zoom bar has been minimised, making it easier to zoom in and out with one hand.

Telephoto lens in food mode

You can now use the telephoto lens when your camera is in food mode, allowing you to take closeups.

Easy filter section

All available filters can be found in one easy-to-use list. To access filters in the Camera app, tap the magic wand symbol in the top right corner of the screen.

Customise your albums in Gallery

You can choose which albums appear by default. You also have the option to hide albums you use less frequently, giving you a more streamline Gallery. Albums can now also be merged to create a single album, and there is the option to create automatic albums containing pictures of people selected by you.

A new look for stories

The stories that are automatically created in Gallery have a renewed interactive slideshow view. You can now tap or swipe to move between photos and videos.

Add watermarks to photos

Include date and time information, or your own personalised watermark, to photos you take.

Portrait mode effects after editing

Effects like blur, studio and high-key mono are now saved even after you crop a photo. This means that you can adjust the effects any time.

More sticker options

Sixty new emoji stickers have been added so that you can make your photos more fun.

Create stickers from any photo

Use the lasso to select the part of the photo you want to turn into a sticker. Then add outlines and decorations. You can use your personal stickers on images and in videos.

Draw perfect shapes on photos and videos

Easily draw some shapes with the pen tool in the photo editor. Tap and hold the shape when you have finished to turn it into a perfect shape.

Enhanced gif editing

It is now possible to trim, transform and edit the size and shape of gifs.

Customise spacebar row

Choose which keys and punctuation is shown next to the spacebar on the bottom row of the keyboard.

New emojis for emoji pairs

There are eighty-eight new emojis and ten animations that you can turn into pairs on the emoji keyboard.

Rearrange expression buttons

Tap and hold emojis, stickers and other buttons to rearrange the order.

Extract text from images or from the screen

It is now possible to extract text using the Samsung Keyboard, Internet, Gallery or from screenshots. You can then modify and paste the extracted text into messages, emails or documents.

Contextual suggestions

If any text appears in an image in Gallery, the camera or other apps, you will be recommended certain actions based on the text. For example, if a phone number or a web address appears in a picture, you can tap to call the number or visit the website.

Readability options in the Quick settings panel

Add high contrast font, colour inversion, colour adjustment and colour filter to the Quick settings panel to give you easier access.

Easily edit the Accessibility button

Tap and hold the Accessibility button to change the features that you want to be able to access quickly. To find the accessibility button:

More voice assistants

Several types of voice feedback are available to give you help when you’re using your device, even if you can’t see the screen clearly. Your device can read out the keyboard input, and you can use Bixby vision to identify objects.

Use your phone as a magnifier

You can add a shortcut to Magnifier in Accessibility settings.

Exceptions for Do not disturb

It is now possible to set individual contacts and apps as exceptions for when your phone is in Do not disturb. This means that you will still receive notifications from these contacts or apps when your phone is in Do not disturb.

Different language settings for each app

Choose which language you want to use each app by changing your preference in Settings.

Improved menu for sound and vibration settings

The menu has been rearranged to make it easier to find the settings you need. You can set a ringtone, change the volume and adjust the vibration all in the same place.

Auto optimisation

Device care will ensure that your phone is running smoothly by automatically optimising your device. You can also set your device to auto restart when needed to help keep it in the best condition possible.

RAM Plus in Device care

You now have the option to turn off RAM Plus in Device care if you don’t need it or if you need to restrict how much storage space is used.

Warning when you share personal information

If a picture you want to share contains personal information like credit card numbers, ID or a passport, the Share panel will warn you. This means that you can reconsider sharing the picture if necessary.

Intuitive security check

A Security dashboard has been added to the Settings menu. It allows you to check for security issues and fix them quickly.

Secure browsing in Samsung Internet

A padlock icon appears in the address bar when you visit a website on Samsung Internet showing the site’s security status. You can tap the icon to learn what information the website gathers.

Updated app icons and illustrations

App icons and symbols have been updated to make them larger and easier to recognise. A new design style has also been applied to some apps to give them a more consistent look.

Smoother animation

Switching between screens now feels more natural thanks to new animations and transition effects. Animations and other visual feedback appear instantly when you touch the screen, which makes interactions more intuitive.

Improved blur effects and simplified colours

The background blur effect on the Quick settings panel and the home screen has been improved with brighter colours to provide a clearer experience. The colour schemes on certain apps have been simplified to help avoid distractions.

Notification accessibility

Whenever you use an app for the first time, you will be asked if you want to allow notifications. This gives you the freedom to stop notifications from apps you don’t want to be disturbed by.

Detailed settings

It is possible to control types of notifications separately. Choose whether you want to see all pop-up notifications, just some, or none of them. You can also control app icon badges and lock screen notifications.

Easier controls

Notification controls can now be found at the top of the app notification settings. This makes it easier to block notifications if you feel that an app is sending you too many notifications.

Improved design

It is now easier and quicker to read notifications thanks to larger app icons and improved text alignment.

Easily discover pre-set routines

The Discover screen has been simplified to make it easier to discover pre-set routines.

More conditions and actions

More conditions and actions have been added. You can now start routines when you activate airplane mode or mobile hotspot. New actions include opening an app pair, adjusting the left/right sound balance, among others.

Sleep mode

This new routine lets you automate a range of actions to help optimise your phone at bedtime.

Active routines at a glance

Any routines that are currently running will be shown at the top of the screen. This will give you a quick overview of what’s happening and let you make any change you need to.

Stack widgets on the home screen

Widgets can be combined to form a single widget to help keep your home screen tidy. Simply drag one widget onto another to create a stack, then swipe to switch between them.

Smart suggestions widget

This new widget suggests apps to use, people to call, events to add to the Calendar, and more, all based on usage patterns.

Change view with a gesture

It is now easier to switch from full screen to split screen. Simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen with two fingers. You can also switch easily from full screen to pop-up by swiping one finger from either top corner to the centre of the screen.

Quickly open apps in split screen

You can open apps by dragging them from the taskbar or from the Recents screen. Then drag them to the top, bottom, left, right or edge of the screen to open them in split screen.

Newly added taskbar

A search button has been added to the taskbar of Samsung DeX, making it easier to find apps. You can access tasks in certain apps by right clicking on them. There is also the option to customise buttons and apps to display on the taskbar.

New notification indicator

A red dot will appear in the notification button on the taskbar if there are any new notifications.

Hide phone notifications on TV

If you’re viewing your phone on the TV, you can choose to hide notifications to keep them private.

Google Meet video calls

Google Duo and Google Meet have been combined to create one fantastic video call experience. You can use it to make instant video calls, as well as to schedule meetings with up to 100 people.

Connected devices menu

A connected devices menu has been added to Settings. This means that it is quicker and easier to access features that work with other devices, such as Quick Share, Samsung DeX and Smart View, all from the same place.

Diverse AR emoji stickers

You can express yourself even better with the 15 default stickers along with new stickers available to download.

Do more with AR emojis

Choose any picture you like from your Gallery to use as a background in the AR Emoji camera. You can also pair two emojis together to create dances and poses.

Manage event invitees

When adding events to your Google calendar in the Samsung Calendar app, you can choose whether other invitees can see who else is invited.

Add video conferences to events

You can set up a video conference at the same time you create an event. Anyone invited to the event will receive a link to the conference.

Today category added

This new category will display the reminders that are due today.

Show or hide completed reminders

You have the option to hide or show reminders that you have already completed.

Choose how you view reminders

Choose simpler on-screen reminders or expanded view to include details such as due date.

Easier bookmarks on Samsung Internet

Create and move favourites folders by dragging and dropping.

Enhanced search on My Files

Search all files or just the ones in the current folder. You can search by file name or by information contained in the file, for example text contained in a document or location information in images.

Multiple timers in the Clock app

You can now set up to twenty timers at once.

Redesigned Digital wellbeing app

The features you need are now easier to access.

Safety and emergency

Easily send an SOS message. To call the emergency services, even when your phone is in your pocket or you can’t speak, quickly press the side button five times.

An emergency contact list, made up of contacts on your phone, can be created.
