Privacy Notice for Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2024
This Privacy Notice is supplemental to Samsung’s general privacy policy at www.samsung.com/uk/info/privacy/ (“GPP”) and explains the privacy practices of Samsung Electronics (UK) Limited, a company incorporated under the laws of England and headquartered at Samsung House, 2000 Hillswood Drive, Chertsey, Surrey KT16 0RS (together “Samsung”, “we”, “us”, “our”) with respect to the information collected by Samsung for the purposes of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition (“Solve for Tomorrow”).
This Privacy Notice provides details about how your personal information will be collected, used, shared, and stored by Samsung as part of the Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2023/24, and should always be read together with the GPP.
In case of any inconsistency or conflict between the terms of this Privacy Notice and the GPP, the terms of this Privacy Notice shall prevail.
Samsung Electronics (UK) Ltd acts as data controller for the processing of your personal data.
What types of information will Samsung collect about you?
When you submit your entry for Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2023/24, we will collect the following categories of information:
- Name
- Age
- Gender
- County
- Level of education
- Employment status
- Area of the country you live in
- Email address
- Phone number
- Postcode
If you are successful in your entry for Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2023/24, we may in addition to the above collect the following categories of information in later rounds of the competition:
- Photographs
- Videos
- Presentations, drawings and other files as required
- Such other relevant personal data regarding your background as you may choose provide to us
How is the collected information used?
Samsung will use the collected information described above for the following purposes:
- To register your entry for Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2023/24;
- To contact you regarding your entry for Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2023/24;
- To administer the running and operation of Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2023/24;
- Where you have opted in to marketing, to provide you with information about our products and services.
- With your separate consent, we may make your personal details available on the Solve for Tomorrow Website, for PR purposes, on social media and on other forms of communication to publicise Solve for Tomorrow.
Samsung’s legal basis to process personal data includes processing that is: necessary for the performance of the contract between you and Samsung (for example, to provide you with Solve for Tomorrow and to identify and authenticate you so you may take part in Solve for Tomorrow); necessary to comply with legal requirements (for example, to comply with applicable accounting rules and to make mandatory disclosures to law enforcement); necessary for Samsung’s legitimate interests (for example, to manage our relationship with you and to improve the operation of Solve for Tomorrow); and based on obtaining your separate consent (for example, to communicate with you about our products and services and provide you with marketing information), which may subsequently be withdrawn at any time by contacting us as specified in the How to Contact Us section of this Privacy Notice without affecting the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal.
How can you delete information obtained by Samsung?
You may contact Samsung’s data protection team at dataprotection.seuk@samsung.com to request that your personal data is deleted. Please note that we will be unable to continue with your entry for Solve for Tomorrow (or to otherwise include you in Solve for Tomorrow activities) if you request to be deleted. In some cases, it may take some time before the information saved on our servers is completely deleted.
To whom do we disclose your personal information?
We may disclose your information internally within our business to the relevant teams such as, without limitation, the customer services team, the legal team, and where you have chosen to receive marketing messages, the marketing teams.
We will also disclose your information to third party agencies and service providers which we may use to assist us in the operation of Solve for Tomorrow from time to time, as well as independent judges who may be involved in judging Solve for Tomorrow entries and submissions across all rounds of the competition.
Please note that we may also share your personal data with other members of the Samsung Electronics Group of companies, where this is relevant.
How We Protect Your Personal Information
We maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect the personal information we obtain through Samsung against unlawful or unauthorised destruction, interference, loss, alteration, access, disclosure, or use. However, please note that despite our reasonable efforts to protect your information, no system or wireless connection is completely secure.
International Data Transfer
Your use of Samsung Solve for Tomorrow may involve the transfer, storage, and processing of your information outside of your country of residence, consistent with this policy. Such countries may include, without limitation, the Republic of Korea. Please note that the data protection and other laws of countries to which your information may be transferred might not be as comprehensive as those in your country. We will take appropriate measures, in compliance with applicable law, to ensure that your personal information remains protected. A copy of these clauses can be obtained by contacting us as specified in the How to Contact Us section of this Privacy Notice.
Retention of Personal Data
We take appropriate steps to ensure that information about you is only retained based on the following logic:
- At least the duration for which the information is used to provide you with the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow related services (and no later than 3 months after the competition finishes);
- As required under law, a contract, or with regard to our statutory obligations; or
- Only for as long as is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, is processed, or longer if required under any contract, by applicable law, or for statistical purposes, subject to appropriate safeguards.
Your Rights and Choices
You are entitled, in accordance with applicable law, to object to or request restriction of the processing of your personal information, to exercise your right of data portability and to request access to, rectification, or removal of your own personal information.
Please note, however, that if you decline to allow Samsung to collect or share certain information, you may not be able to participate in Solve for Tomorrow.
You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority if you consider that our processing of your personal data infringes applicable law. The relevant supervisory authority for the UK is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
