What lock methods can I use on my Samsung Galaxy device?

This article will tell you about the different lock methods on your Samsung Galaxy device. You can find information on regional or network locks here , and help on unlocking your device if you can't get in here.

You have the option to set different lock methods on your Samsung Galaxy device. Note that the methods available will be dependent on your model and operating system. Older models will not have all methods available.

If you use a low security method, some apps may not function correctly. For example, most banking apps will not work if you have set your lock method to 'None' or 'Swipe'

You will also need to set a PIN when you set up your device, even if you are also using another method. Ensure this is something memorable as you will need to enter it if your device is turned on or off, or if you want to perform a factory reset.

Where do I change the type of method I use?

The setting will be found in a slightly different place, depending on your model and operating system.

For newer devices, you can find the lock screen settings at Settings > Lock screen and security OR Lock screen > Screen lock type

On older devices running Android 4.4 and below, the lock screen settings can be found at: Settings > Lock screen > Screen lock

Swipe only or NoneClick to Expand

You can set your device to unlock whenever you swipe the screen or by pressing the power button (None).

This is the lowest level of security. Note that some app developers require a minimum level of security in order for the app to work. Banking apps, in particular, will normally require that you have a minimum level of security set on your device in order to use it.

Note that if you have set biometric information such as a fingerprint or iris scan, and then change your method to Swipe or None, your biometric information will be wiped, and you will need to re-enter your fingerprint or iris information if you change the unlock method back.

You can set your lock method to Swipe or None by going to: Settings > Lock screen OR Lock screen and security > Screen lock type

PINClick to Expand

You can set your device to open with a PIN. This needs at least four numbers

If you set up your device to open with another method, such as fingerprint, you will also be asked to set up a backup method, such as a PIN. This way, if your fingerprint sensor is damaged, you can still access your device.

You can set your PIN or other lock method by going to: Settings > Lock screen OR Lock screen and security > Screen lock type

PatternClick to Expand

You can set your device to unlock by drawing a pattern on the screen. This will require at least four dots.

You can set your Pattern or other lock method by going to: Settings > Lock screen OR Lock screen and security > Screen lock type

Password Click to Expand

You can set a password to unlock the screen. This will need a minimum of four letters, numbers or symbols.

You can set your Password or other lock method by going to: Settings > Lock screen OR Lock screen and security > Screen lock type

FingerprintClick to Expand

Fingerprint recognition recognises the unique characteristics of your fingerprint to unlock the device. This is not only highly secure - your fingerprint is unique - but is also convenient as you merely need to hold your finger to the screen to unlock the device.

When you set up Fingerprint Recognition as your default method, you will also need to set up a backup lock method such as a PIN, pattern or password for additional security. Ensure you set it to something memorable. You will need to enter your backup method in certain circumstances, such as if the device is restarted.

Your fingerprint may not be recognised in certain circumstances, such as if your fingers are dirty or you have spent a long time swimming or washing dishes and the skin is water-logged.

If you set your default method as a fingerprint, you will also need to set a default PIN, pattern or password. You will need to enter this if you restart your device. Make sure it is something you will remember.

You can set your fingerprint (or add additional fingerprints) at: Settings > Biometrics and Security > Fingerprint scanner > Add fingerprint

Note that the function to add more than one fingerprint may not be available on older models.

Iris ScanClick to Expand

Iris Scan uses the unique characteristics of your irises to unlock your device. When using the iris scanner, keep the device around 20-35 centimetres from your face.

When you set up Iris Scan as your default method, you will also need to set up a backup lock method such as a PIN, pattern or password for additional security. Ensure you set it to something memorable. You will need to enter your backup method in certain circumstances, such as if the device is restarted.

The iris scanner may not work effectively if you have a screen protector on your device, you are wearing glasses or have had recent eye surgery (find out more about that here )

You can set Iris Scan as your unlock method by going to: Settings > Lock screen OR Lock screen and security > Screen lock type

Facial recognitionClick to Expand

Facial recognition uses the contours of your face to recognise you. You can then unlock your device simply by looking at it.

When you set up Facial Recognition as your default method, you will also need to set up a backup lock method such as a PIN, pattern or password for additional security. Ensure you set it to something memorable. You will need to enter your backup method in certain circumstances, such as if the device is restarted.

You can set your lock method to Facial Recognition by going to: Settings > Lock screen OR Lock screen and security > Screen lock type

Intelligent ScanClick to Expand

Intelligent Scan uses both your face and irises to unlock the screen, enhancing both security and usability.

When you set up Intelligent Scan as your default method, you will also need to set up a backup lock method such as a PIN, pattern or password for additional security. Ensure you set it to something memorable. You will need to enter your backup method in certain circumstances, such as if the device is restarted.

You can set your lock method to Intelligent Scan by going to: Settings > Lock screen OR Lock screen and security > Screen lock type
