The Frame 2018 Transforms the Home into a Gallery with Advanced Art Features and Technology
Among the many TV innovations that Samsung has pioneered over the years, the company will always be remembered for transforming the TV from being a black box to a work of art with The Frame. The latest version, The Frame 2018 has just become available for purchase in North America and Europe, with other markets to come. The Frame 2018 is the evolution of Samsung’s award-winning lifestyle TV, The Frame. With enhanced features, new customization options and more than 800 available works of art, The Frame 2018 transforms the living room into a dynamic gallery space. Owners of The Frame 2018 now have more ways than ever to customize the look and feel of their room. The Samsung Art Store, the world’s largest art platform for TVs, houses an ever-growing and diverse library of artwork from some of the most prominent museums, galleries and artists around the world – including the recent addition of more than 30 iconic pieces of photography from The New York Times, 21 artworks from the Victoria and Albert Museum and 10 pieces from the YellowKorner gallery. Whether they prefer to change the look of their room each season or want to bring a fresh vibe to their décor for a dinner party, consumers can customize The Frame to create their preferred aesthetic in any room. Thanks to an improved UI, owners of The Frame can browse different art pieces based on the color scheme of the room, or by a particular medium, like drawings or photography. Then, much like curating a music playlist, owners can create a personalized collection that shuffles through their particular selections as often as they like. -
Certified by Testlab: No Burn-in with Samsung QLED TV
Samsung QLED TVs are certified as the burn-in free TVs by video, an acclaimed German tech magazine. Conducted in conjunction with the connect Testlab, a global testing lab, all 2018 Samsung QLED TV series were proved free of burn-in and afterglow reaffirming QLED TVs’ position as one of the most durable displays on the market today. The requirements for TV displays are made ever more demanding by technologies such as High Dynamic Range (HDR). The risk of putative burn-in is of particular concern to TV customers in the premium segment. To see if displays stand up to the exacting performance requirements, the TV experts from video and connect Testlab carried out certification test based on the Information Display Measurements Standard (IDMS), an international norm for panel measurements, and concentrated on QLED TV’s HDR content display quality. Samsung’s QLED TVs passed the stress test and received the certificate for ꞌno burn-inꞌ and ꞌno afterglowꞌ1. In a 72-hour endurance test, the testers performed measurements on Samsung QLED TVs to check their putative burn-in effects, which may be caused by static picture elements. These effects, also referred to as ꞌmemory effectꞌ, ꞌghostingꞌ, ꞌimage retentionꞌ, ꞌsticky imageꞌ or imprecisely as ꞌburn-inꞌ, tangibly impair the picture quality of a television. In the case of some display technologies, memory effects will start glowing after one minute of TV use if static picture elements are shown on their screen in high luminosities. In the test, the TVs were therefore made to display a checkerboard pattern for deep black and very bright white values for longer periods of time. The test engineers added variable text elements and an intermittently blinking white frame to the test picture so that the automatic stills detection customary for modern HDR TVs could not spring into action. This helped the testers create similar conditions as in HDR games. In addition to the standard analysis, the testers used dark gray images with brightness values of 10 nits– which will show if dark pixels are brightened up. The measurements showed that the tested Samsung QLED TVs remained unaffected by the rigorous tests. The TV can thus theoretically be left on permanently without picture elements like network logos leaving an afterglow or burning in. Taking into account that the quality of a TV screen is strongly impaired by afterglow and burn-in – especially after emitting HDR quality pictures with extreme brightness values – Samsung QLED TV is a product of choice among many other modern TVs for those planning to invest in a high-end TV. It guarantees powerful visual capabilities without potential memory effects or permanent damage. “Anyone who is particularly sensitive to ghost images and unwilling to run any risks over many years of use will be on the safe side with LCD or QLED, respectively,”2 conclude the test experts. -
How Samsung’s QLED TV Earned video Magazine’s ‘Burn-In’ Certification
Samsung’s QLED TVs recently became the first TVs to be certified burn-in free by video, an acclaimed German tech magazine. The magazine’s comprehensive evaluation assessed vulnerability to burn-in and afterglow, which can permanently impair picture quality. The results of the test proved that Samsung’s TVs were as free of both, and demonstrated what makes QLED TVs some of the most durable displays on the market today. -
Samsung and Dezeen Hold a Global Design Competition for Ambient Mode
Samsung Electronics announced a partnership with Dezeen, a leading design and architectural magazine, inviting designers to create graphics for the Ambient Mode feature on Samsung’s QLED TVs. Held from June 25 to August 3, the contest will reward 29,500 euros in total prize money. To enter the contest, designers need to submit their best Ambient Mode designs using either static or animated images. Samsung’s Ambient Mode does away with the mundane black screen that dominates a room when the television is not in use. Built into the 2018 QLED televisions, Ambient Mode makes the screen appear transparent by mimicking the appearance of the wall behind it, while also enhancing its environment by overlaying additional imagery and information – such as the weather – if desired. “Ambient Mode creates a useful and innovative experience for users, even when their television is turned off. Knowing that this experience is unique to every user, the Ambient Mode design competition is meant to develop imagery that resonates with each of our consumers,” said Jongsuk Chu, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We hope that designers will take this opportunity to show off their creativity and help us grow the library of designs available to consumers on Ambient Mode.” To enter, contestants must pick one of the four backgrounds provided by Samsung and develop concepts that build on both the television’s environment and the time of day in which the feature would be utilized. Designers can base their entry on one of Samsung’s existing Ambient Modes – décor, information or personal photos – or they can propose a completely novel mode. Further, as Samsung and Dezeen are looking for concepts that highlight how Ambient Mode can mirror the environment and blend into the aesthetic of consumers’ homes, entrants will need to specify a particular lifestyle for their design. The competition’s judging panel includes esteemed designers Neville Brody and Erwan Bouroullec, as well as members of Samsung’s and Dezeen’s design teams – Dontae Lee, Executive Vice President and the Head of the Corporate Design Center at Samsung Electronics and Amy Frearson, editorial director of Dezeen. The competition will reward 29,500 euros in total prize money. The grand prize winner will receive 8,000 euros while two runners-up will receive 3,000 euros, respectively. 1,500 euros will be awarded to the other seven shortlisted entrants and 1,000 euros will be given to five longlisted designers. Dezeen will interview the finalists and publish a story about each of them. The competition entry is free of charge. However, entrants must be over 18 years of age with the ability to present their work to a panel of English-speaking judges. For more information on how to enter, please visit <b><a href="http://www.dezeen.com/samsung" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dezeen.com/Samsung</a></b>. This is the second contest in which Samsung and Dezeen have partnered to organize. In 2017, the two companies cooperated to host a TV accessory design competition for Samsung QLED lineup’s TV stands and received a total of 1,200 works from 83 countries. The contest participant Fulden Denheli received a grand prize and later was also named the winner at IFA 2017 for her adaptable, Scandinavian-inspired concept. -
Beyond the Stadium: Watching Live Sports on a Samsung QLED TV
With so much sport available to watch this summer, viewers might need a little help locating the events they want to watch. Samsung 2018 QLED TVs are furnished with Bixby and a Universal Guide, two intelligent features which make browsing for content even easier. Bixby, the intelligent assistant, allowed the Newsroom to search for the team or game they wanted to see using a simple voice command, without scrolling through the schedules of every TV channel looking for content. So when viewers pressed the microphone button on their remote control and said, “Find Channels Showing Brazil Games”, a list of matches played by Brazilian teams appears on the screen. The Universal Guide is equipped with a specialized Sports tab that recommends relevant content provided by the TV’s cable and satellite connections, as well as online streaming content, in a single place and prominently displays the titles of on-air sports games at the top of the screen. -
‘All in’ on AI: Your Personal Guide Helps Find Your New Favorite TV Show
Samsung Electronics has introduced Universal Guide to its 2018 smart TVs as a way of helping users find content that fits their tastes. The clever AI deployed as part of the functionality can make suggestions of shows the viewer might like. Universal Guide is an advanced program guide unlike any that came before. It learns a user’s preferences by watching for patterns over the space of a few weeks. It then uses the last two weeks of data to suggest suitable content on the smart TV including live channels. Although similar services have been available before, this is the first to use the power of AI to make intelligent content recommendations. There are five tabs on the Universal Guide: For You, TV Shows, Movies, Sports, and Music. For You is the service that automatically recommends shows it thinks the user will like based on machine learning analysis of previous viewing habits. On the TV Shows, Movie, Sports, and Music tabs, the Universal Guide offers the latest trending content including Over the Top (OTT) content separate from the personalized recommendations on the For You tab. -
[NEXT for QLED] Part 1: Samsung Dominates the Large Screen TV Market
2018 has been a breakthrough year for Samsung and QLED TV, with this year’s lineup now bigger, more beautiful and convenient than ever. Since the debut of Samsung’s new lineup of QLED TVs in New York in March, QLED TV has been leading the market for extra-large, ultra-high definition TVs. In this special series, entitled 'NEXT for QLED' , Samsung Newsroom explores the different avenues of innovation that QLED TV technology is pursuing, as well as how QLED is helping dream the future of TV displays. When it comes to the state of the current TV market, it’s clear that consumers are after larger screens, a trend driven by rising income levels and changing consumer expectations. Recent years have seen the standard for what constitutes a large screen TV change. Whereas previously, large screen TVs were classified as measuring 55-inch. Now, that classification has crept up to TVs over 65- or 75- inch in size, with the super large category also now a category in its own right. -
Samsung’s 2018 QLED TVs Take Immersion to New Heights
The 2018 QLED TVs’ clean-cut design enables users to be utterly immersed in their favorite content. Because convoluted cables are distracting, the TVs feature the One Invisible Connection, which combines the AV and power lines, along with the cables of peripheral devices (via the One Connect Box), into a single, transparent cable that eliminates visual distractions and keeps the area around the TV tidy. This first-of-its-kind innovation can also be extended up to 15 meters, so users may freely position their TV without worrying about its proximity to a power source. -

What’s New in the 2018 QLED TVs
Samsung’s QLED TVs, which introduced the world’s first cadmium-free Quantum Dot technology, were unveiled at a First Look event in New York on March 7. The 2018 QLED TVs feature improved picture quality, design, connectivity and intelligence, creating a truly limitless TV. To create even more stunning picture quality, the TVs feature new <b>Direct Full Array</b> backlighting technology that ensures that the screen is illuminated accurately. This reduces blooming and halo effects and enables deeper contrast, with inky blacks and brilliant whites. Advanced <b>Anti-reflection</b> technology ensures that the TVs’ spectacular picture quality can be enjoyed from almost any angle, and also helps boost contrast. Aligned with the new products, which include models wider than 75 inches, <b>Q Engine</b> technology automatically upscales on-screen content to UHD levels to further enhance viewers’ immersion. Samsung’s 2018 QLED TVs’ style changes based on innovative technologies are also noticeable. <b>Ambient Mode</b> is an energy-saving function that allows the TV to elegantly display images as well as real-time information such as the weather or news. Samsung has also introduced a simple solution to eliminate cable clutter, called the <b>One Invisible Connection</b>, which integrates power cables and data lines that were previously separated to allow the TVs to harmonize with their surrounding aesthetic. Samsung’s intelligence platform, Bixby, is making its TV debut in the 2018 QLED lineup. <b>Bixby1</b> allows users to use their voice to ask Bixby a question, issue a command, and activate a range of useful functions including simple controls over their TV and smart home appliances. The new QLED TVs are also designed to seamlessly connect with <b>SmartThings</b>-compatible devices to offer users even greater control over their home’s smart technology. In addition, the TVs’ <b>Universal Guide</b> service curates content from the TV and connected sources to offer users a customized viewing experience that they can enjoy at any time. The Challenge of Living with Color Blindness
Most color blindness is genetic. Around 80 percent of people with color vision deficiencies are male. Many people aren't even aware they have the condition until they start to compare how they see color with someone else. So, what is it like to live with color vision deficiency? How do you cope with day-to-day tasks that involve color recognition? “The first thing to understand is what color vision deficiency is and isn’t,” said Dr. Paul Harris, who practices at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. “Usually, color blindness is considered a red-green problem, but that’s not entirely correct. People with color deficiencies often confuse red and green because of an inability to identify one or the other. There are three types of color blindness - red, green or blue/yellow, although the latter is rare.” Dr. Paul Harris, Southern College of Optometry “We know that most color vision deficiencies are inherited. They come along with the gene that determines male or female. Usually, color blindness is considered a red-green problem, but that's not entirely correct. People with color deficiencies often confuse red and green because of an inability to identify one or the other. There are three types of color blindness - red, green or blue/yellow, although the latter is rare.” “For example, a person who has a problem detecting red has something wrong with the sensory parts at the back of the retina that would pick up the red. Those people can see green just fine –can label different greens and even see the richness of greens. But when a red comes along, the different shades of red get confused with the greens.” -

6 Features to Consider Before Buying Your Next Premium TV
What it is: A <b><a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/color-volume-what-it-is-and-why-it-matters-for-tv" target="_blank">standard</a></b> for evaluating a TV’s ability to produce accurate colors at all luminance levels. The higher the color volume, the better the TV will be at expressing vivid, accurate colors. Why it matters: Manufacturers in the fiercely competitive TV industry are constantly exploring ways to deliver standout picture quality. The color volume measurement emerged as a way to evaluate a UHD (or 4K) TV’s ability to produce immersive viewing experiences, focusing on how the TV performs under various lighting conditions. Color volume matters because if a depicted image exceeds a TV’s peak luminance, it may appear washed out or faded, and the quality of the viewing experience suffers. How Samsung’s innovating with it: Samsung’s QLED TVs, which feature a peak brightness of 1,500 to 2,000 nits, are the first displays to reaches 100 percent color volume. This means that in typical viewing environments, the TVs produce brighter and deeper colors that allow content to be displayed in the manner that producers intended. In addition, QLED TV’s screen-coating technology reduces reflection by 98.5 percent, providing a more comfortable viewing experience even under strong sunlight or lighting. -
Samsung’s Advanced T-Commerce Services Expand What’s Possible for TV
In Portugal, Samsung is advancing the T-commerce experience even a step further, with Samsung Smart TV users there able to order various goods including food such as sushi, pizza and wine from the comfort of their TV screen. The service has been made possible with Samsung’s partnership with a local cloud-based platform yubuy®, which provides T-Commerce solutions and has partnered with more than 20 domestic Portuguese and international brands like Pizza Hut. For Samsung Smart TV users in Portugal, the yubuy® app is the most convenient way to shop from a distance, from ordering to delivery, with its simple and intuitive interface and secure and contextualized solution that runs on Samsung Smart TVs. In terms of payment options, the yubuy® app offers several modes, ranging from cash on delivery, electronic bill payment, credit card and payment service via a mobile app. yubuy® already has a reach of two million households (or six million people) via cable TV, which is more than 60 percent of the Portuguese population. Samsung Checkout on TV, and Samsung’s local partnership with yubuy® in Portugal, highlight the continuous efforts that Samsung is making to advance T-Commerce solutions and evolve the TV experience. -
THIS IS QLED TV, Part 7: QLED TV – How Samsung Achieved Dominance in the Premium TV Market
The TV industry is now witnessing an era of fierce rivalry among premium TVs with many companies promoting ultra-large UHD screens, advanced smart TV functions and sleek designs. Despite the competition, Samsung Electronics’ 2017 QLED TV demonstrated strong growth in the second quarter to secure first place in the overall flat-panel TV market, as well as in the above-$$1,500 global premium TV market. As discussed in an earlier edition of the THIS IS QLED TV series (<b><a href="http://www.samsung.com/global/tv/news/this-is-qled-tv-part-2-winning-the-top-5.html" target="_blank">Part 2</a></b>), premium TVs worth more than $1,500 account for just five percent of total TV sales, but have a much larger business impact, accounting for 20 percent of sales revenue and 40 percent of profits. -

THIS IS QLED TV, Part 5: Spearheading the Big Screen TV Trend
What size will your next TV be? That was the survey question posed in May to members of the <b><a href="http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lcd-flat-panel-displays/2851642-poll-what-size-will-your-next-4k-tv.html" target="_blank">AVS forum</a></b>, an online community and platform for display device professionals. Out of seven hundred respondents, 38 percent chose 70 to 79-inch, while 29 percent selected 60 to 69-inch TVs. More than 90% of the total participants, including these two groups, said they are willing to purchase 60-inch and larger TVs. A big screen TV is one of the most talked-about items among Korean consumers as well. On Korean online communities, many consumers show excitement for home theater and indicate that they would prefer to stay home and watch 4K movies, instead of going to a movie theater. Others think that construction companies will soon start to sell apartments with a 100-inch or larger TV installed on a wall. -
THIS IS QLED TV, Part 4: Burn-In Free QLED TVs, the Solution for Video Game Enthusiasts
In recent years, there have been huge advances in gaming. Console manufacturers are producing systems that support 4K graphics and High Dynamic Range (HDR), taking gaming to a new level. In line with this trend, TV makers have also been producing new TVs to come alongside these consoles in producing the crisp, bright and colorful images expected by gamers, and ultimately elevate the gaming experience. Samsung Electronics’ new QLED TVs provide insight what makes for a great gaming TV, for example being free from the troublesome issue of image retention (commonly referred to as “burn-in”) which can occur after longtime game play. Here are the specific requirements that make for a great gaming TV: -
THIS IS QLED TV, Part 2: Winning the Top 5%
Although premium TVs account for just five percent of global sales, for many manufacturers they are a golden goose, accounting for roughly 20 percent of total revenue and 40 percent of total profits. In other words, if a manufacturer was to lose ground in premium TVs, it would most likely lose out on the entire market. Just three years ago, most TVs targeted at the premium sector carried price tags of over $1,500. Today, fierce competition has lowered prices, which means consumers can easily find premium TVs at a base price for $1,200. Don’t let the markdowns fool you, though; premium TVs are still, on average, more than twice the price of most TVs on the market. -
THIS IS QLED TV, Part 3: Optimized for the Typical TV Viewing Environment
Furthermore, a 2013 study conducted by performance management company <b><a href="http://www.marketingcharts.com/television/how-much-tv-do-people-watch-during-the-day-28359/" target="_blank">Neilsen</a></b> shows that while TV viewers watch around two hours of TV in the evening between 8PM and 11PM, they also spend more than one-and-a-half hours watching during the daytime hours of 11AM to 3PM. In other words, people are watching TV in rather bright environments. Therefore, a premium TV should be able to provide the best picture quality in viewing environments where lighting levels are high. -
THIS IS QLED TV, Part 1: 2017 QLED TV Sales Getting into Full-swing
This year’s global TV market sales are heating up. Now in the second quarter of 2017, global TV manufacturers are vying for the attention of consumers by showcasing their latest premium TVs – products that are presently driving the entire television market. Among them, Samsung Electronics, the world’s No. 1 TV maker for 11 consecutive years, is looking to yet again take the lead with its 2017 QLED TV. Is Your Television Smart?
In the past, picture quality, price and screen size were the foremost factors considered by consumers when buying a television. According to a survey on the usage and attitude (U&A) of American consumers conducted by Samsung Electronics in 2014 and 2016, the significance of the aforementioned factors decreased whereas the importance of smart function doubled from 15.1 percent to 29.6 percent within the two years. On a separate survey* conducted in June 2015, American consumers were asked the question “Why do you want to upgrade your television?” The options ‘picture quality’ and ‘smart function’ tied at 46 percent, followed by ‘screen size’. -

Appraising Diamonds and Assessing QLED TV Picture Quality—What Do They Have in Common?
Light and color. These are two of the most important factors determining the quality of diamonds. Because colorless diamonds are extremely rare, they command a much higher value compared to yellow or brown diamonds. And as the price of diamonds depend on extremely subtle differences in color and clarity, the level of scrutiny diamond appraisers apply to diamonds are often extraordinary. When it comes to evaluating a product based on its light and color, assessing a TV’s picture quality isn’t too different. -

A Brighter, Crystal-infused Future
A quantum dot (QD) is a nanometer-scale crystal so minuscule it can't be seen by the naked eye. One QD is less than just 15 atoms in diameter and is extremely energy efficient due to photoactive properties that allow it to both absorb and emit light with less energy. So, what does a QD have to do with creating sustainable energy supplies? Solar is potentially the best solution to the energy problem. The sun ensures we have plenty of free and readily available sunlight for solar panels to soak up. The only issue lies in the inefficient power generation of solar cells. But according to Dr. Sohee Jeong of Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), quantum dots, "could be applied to the next generation of solar cells." "Quantum dots can easily control the area where sunlight is absorbed, in accordance with the particle size. Because it is in liquid form, which has lower production cost, it can be easily applied to a mass manufacturing process," says Sohee. "With quantum dots and a new way of capturing the energy, we can produce more efficient and economical solar cells." -
Samsung and YouTube Expand Global HDR Content Offerings on all 2016 Quantum dot TVs
Samsung Electronics today announced that it will support YouTube’s global HDR playback on television for the first time, through an expanded version of the YouTube application. The YouTube Application is available on all 2016 Samsung Quantum dot TVs and UHD TVs and will launch progressively throughout the world from December. YouTube will support High Dynamic Range (HDR) video streaming, offering a wide range of HDR content. Launched through an automatic software update, consumers who use all 2016 Samsung Quantum dot TV and UHD TVs can access HDR content simply by visiting the HDR category within the YouTube application on <b><a href="https://www.youtube.com/4k" target="_blank" title="new window open">YouTube’s 4K</a></b> channel, providing an easy way to navigate and enjoy premium content. "With the global availability of YouTube’s HDR, we at Samsung are thrilled to support the best HDR viewing experience and a wide range of HDR content for users to enjoy," said Seline Han, Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. "We are confident that our TVs will bring to life an immersive HDR viewing experience — all from the comfort of our users’ homes." To coincide with the launch, the YouTube application will feature new HDR videos from popular YouTube content creators, such as <b><a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/MysteryGuitarMan" target="_blank" title="new window open">MysteryGuitarMan</a></b> and <b><a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/jacobschwarz" target="_blank" title="new window open">Jacob + Katie Schwarz.</a></b> To ensure the proliferation of new HDR content, additional YouTube creators will be able to utilize the YouTube Spaces LA and NYC, which provide HDR production resources to content creators. With a growing number of HDR content providers, as well as the numerous creators already producing HDR video content, YouTube’s HDR support is expected to introduce more genre offerings in the coming year and satisfy user demand for a true-to-life viewing experience on the content they enjoy the most. "We are thrilled to announce the launch of HDR support on Samsung’s Quantum dot TVs," said Heather Thompson Rivera, Director of Product Partnerships at YouTube. "By combining Samsung’s commitment to picture quality and our desire to offer the best content available, we will work together to build a strong ecosystem that improves HDR content creation and allows users to enjoy more diverse content in the best quality possible." Emerging as one of the most sought after display technologies in the last few years, HDR is an image reproduction technology that analyzes the contrast ratio of a video to help express even the most subtle differences in shades and tones of color. Paired with Samsung’s Quantum dot TV, the picture that is produced appears more realistic and life-like on screen. In addition, Samsung’s Quantum dot TVs have the capacity to generate peak brightness of 1,000 nits, optimized for the most ideal HDR viewing experience. -

Samsung and the Vienna State Opera are Streaming Classical Performances with HDR
Some of the most popular content to watch at home in Ultra-High Definition (UHD) has been opera and ballet. The intricate costumes, ornate stage design and wondrous performances can come alive in UHD, so people can appreciate great performances even when they are unable to make it to the concert hall in person. However, staging classical performances for television viewing has always required some changes to the production, even in UHD. Many theaters feature high-contrasts, with brightly lit singers and sets, while backgrounds can be quite dark. In the past, that forced production teams to turn up the lights for broadcasting or make other technical adjustments. Now, Samsung is taking its classical streaming to the next level, thanks to High Dynamic Range (HDR). With 4K UHD resolution, the Samsung SERIF TV offers the best picture quality available in a 40” TV*, making it just as beautiful to watch as it is to experience. Additionally, the SERIF TV features the exclusive Curtain Mode interface that veils content on the screen to give an abstract impression of what is happening in the background, shutting down content without turning off the TV itself. Even when Curtain Mode is active, viewers can still access services such as a clock, Bluetooth speakers, apps and their photo gallery. -

Samsung 2016 UHD TVs Receive Certification for Top UHD Standards from Digital Europe
Samsung Electronics announced today that all of its 2016 UHD TV models have attained the Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV certification from Digital Europe (DE), a collaborative body of European IT and consumer electronics businesses. Comprised of 62 corporate members and 37 National Trade Associations, Digital Europe is one of the most influential organizations representing the digital technology industry in Europe. Samsung TVs, ranging from the 2016 SUHD TV lineup to the Series 6 UHD TVs, have met the strict standards for UHD TV certification as specified by DE, and will now bear the European UHD TV logo, as well as the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) label. Both certification labels will be on display on Samsung UHD TVs at this year’s IFA exhibition. For its certification, DE has specifically defined a ‘Pixel’ as the minimum picture resolution element, capable of rendering the same luminance scale as the entire display. The horizontal and vertical pixel count must be of the complete red, green and blue triple sub-pixel block, while not counting additional non-RGB sub-pixels. -
Samsung Announces HDR+ Firmware Update for 2016 SUHD TVs
Samsung Electronics is continuing its reign as the leading home entertainment brand by adding an HDR+ firmware update to all of its 2016 SUHD TVs with Quantum dot display. The firmware update is designed to enhance High Dynamic Range (HDR) quality to its highest picture quality capacity, even if the source isn’t in HDR format. As part of Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs with Quantum dot display, HDR is an essential element in the new era of UHD TV viewing. HDR makes bright areas of the screen look even brighter, allows the TV to display new colors and significantly expands the range of the contrast ratio on-screen. “The HDR+ function offers an exceptional HDR viewing experience to all 2016 SUHD and UHD TVs consumers,” said Jong-hee Han, Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re thrilled to share this latest advancement with our consumers to access directly on their 2016 SUHD TVs. Samsung is bringing the highest form of picture quality right to their living rooms.” One of the biggest benefits of HDR+ is its ability to upgrade Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) content to HDR-like picture quality, allowing viewers to enjoy all of their favorite content in the highest picture quality possible. With HDR native contents, HDR+ also uncovers previously hidden images from darker content scenes, supplementing the level of brightness to express objects hidden in darker shadows. For brighter content scenes, HDR+ increases the level of contrast ratio to differentiate objects from the background, while still depicting more image details on the screen for an overall better picture. Features designed specifically for picture quality experts have also been enhanced with HDR+. In “Expert Mode,” picture quality experts can customize HDR effects to suit individual users by calibrating brightness, contrast ratio and gradation to the finest degree. These settings can be accessed within the “Picture – Special viewing” mode options, where HDR+ is activated. -
